On the 400ex it's every 100 hrs, but I haven't done mine yet, I need to though. I wouldn't bother doing it unless you hear the ticking, or just want to check them out. I'd suggest getting a manual so you can look some of the things up, like tolerance, clearance and when etc.

ALRIGHT THANNKS. I GOT MY QUAD FOR FREE FROM MY FATHER N LAWS BEST FRIEND. THATS RIGHT FREE... ITS A 96 300 EX AND HE WAS THE SECOND OWNER AND I WAS GOING THROUGH THE QUAD AND TIGHTING UP ALL THE LOOSE ENDS. HE DIDNT WANT IT ANYMORE BECAUSE HE WAS GOING TO BUY A NEW ONE.THE PLASTICS WERE ALL BROKE TO HELL AND THE BATTERY TERMINAL WAS LOOSE.THATS IT. SO I TIGHTNED UP THE TERMINAL AND IT CRANKED RIGHT UP. RUNS EXCELENT JUST NEEDS SOME MAINTENANCE.

If you dont hear ticking then dont worry about it. Usually its ever 100hrs but i do adjust mine, jsut to be sure, twice a year, middle of the year then end of year

Just because they aren't ticking doesn't meqan they don't need adjusting. They'll only tick if they loosen up.

They're actually more likely to tighten up, especially if the motor is revved hard on a regular basis. The tightening is due to wear of the valves and seats. An indication that they're too tight is increased difficulty when starting, especially when the motor is hot and the clearances are reduced even further due to heat and expansion.
