you will run into serious issues obtaining parts for the tecate. the 250R is the logical choice.

go with the 250R, the tecate is extremely hard to find parts for.

1988 and 1989 are basically the same except for color. I thing 1988 was the nicest looking R made IMO! Get the honda

Do yourself a favor and get the 250R. Still one of the greatest quads to date.

for a rider get the 250r, for a occasional rider get the tecate, those tecates with white and blue plastic are worth some money, especailly if its mint, uncut plastic. Parts for the tecate are hard to get, 250r's are very easy to get parts. Also the 250r is more reilable. tecates will turn some heads real fast, alot more than any 250r will. I'd get the 250r, I have 2 atc250r's and love them, I had a trx250r and I currently have a trx250r in the works. I had a 85 tecate 3 and it was a nightmare getting parts, it was fast, handling good, but mine wasn't reilable, I fixed most of the stuff, but I grew sick of looking at it when I was looking for parts and they weren't cheap either.

I own both. I rode a 88 T4 during my highschool days and I just was unable to get rid of it.. I still have it today. When I pull it out it turns some heads. When I eat up a 250r and spit out a piped banshee it turns more heads. Parts are a nightmare. They are expensive. I never had many issues with mine. There are parts avaliable form them through cross reference and there are guys that are putting together money to get plastics remade.

If you want something to ride and its going to be your ownly bike your going to want a 250r. There are many aftermarket parts avaliable and at high volume which makes the price cheaper.

Good luck to you,

Adam

have you ever even see a tecate? i love my R but those things are fast. its a shame no one has parts for them because they are screamers when built.

Tecates are nice. In basically stock form, they're a bit faster than the 250r, but the handling isn't quite as good. If I had a choice between a Tecate and a LT250, I'd take the Tecate any day.

But they are fairly rare. They are just common enough to NOT be collector's items and be worth a bunch of money on their own, but still rare enough that it's dang near impossible to find parts for. Nobody makes engine kits, A-arm kits would probably require a custom order. You're very limited in hop-up parts, and replacement parts are a nightmare.

Sure, if you never want to upgrade, and nothing ever broke, the Tecate would be just a good a choice as any other quad. But that's simply not the case.

There are some people making parts for tecates, They are a nightmare to get parts for but the parts are out there. My T-4 has a LA Sleeve Co. 300 Big Bore kit on it. Tecate Connection makes topends and other parts including Pipes that peak performance. There are not nearly the parts avaliable or mods like the honda. A built Tecate has limitations, unlike the honda and yamaha which are still having new and improved mods everyday. I think that a total of 10k Tecates were produced in the T-4 form. I know that 5k were built in 1988 and I imagine the same for 87.

Herrman racing sells a-arms, swingers, and abut every chassis part you could want for a tecate, I think their front ends use honda 250r parts and I know there is a company that makes swinger for them that use honda 250r axles, carriers, brakes and such. Probably most of the tecate aftermarket parts now are strongly based on 250r designs and use mostly 250r parts.
