Idle your engine 5 to 10 minutes, Shut it down, take dip stick out wipe off, reinsert. do not screw in, pull back out, should be between hatch marks, adjust to top hatch mark. Per clymer manual.

Sounds like you're not checking the level correctly:ermm:

if u drain your oil tank and your engine case ( the 12m bolt by your gear shifter...that not many people ever bother to drain ) a 400ex will hold 2 qts. and be perfect

I have a 2000 ex I drain the oil from both places. Then when you refill I fill up the oil resvoir then start the bike and let it run for 30 sec then It holds 2 qt's fine. How often do you guys change your oil. I try to change mine about every 6 or 7 gas tanks. Keep in mind my bike is stock. When I change it the oil is nice a golden
:D

i dont know really why your not supposed to, but i think it is for to get a better reading, and gives you a little more in case it burns some?

I'd go with what the manual says before what the dealer says;)

Its best to use what it says in the Clymer, to much oil will burn up your oil pump.
