Why didnt you tape the rotors and such off as well?

stalefish_132
01-02-2006, 08:23 PM
its just over spray and it comes off easy enough with gun wash.
and it looks worse than it actually is.

01-02-2006, 08:37 PM
Looks pretty sweet but I have a qustion, are you powder coating it or spray painting it?

01-02-2006, 08:42 PM

that paint will hold up for a lil while but it will eventually wear off....key is lots of clear coat....and why didnt you just take the axle, and bearing carrier out of the swingarm housing and the paint job woulda came out alot better

Chino
01-03-2006, 11:02 AM
i can't tell if you have your hub threads taped off or not, hopefully you do. and getting paint on your lugnuts isnt the best idea, they will strip alot easier now because the paint makes them thicker and they are not now exactly the right size as before. if i were you i would have took your a arms off and painted them as well as disassembling the rearend to paint to swingarm. i guess if you can't afford to powdercoat it then that's your only option. just not my thing...

Looks like you could've taken another 2 hours fully prepping it and it would've looked twice as good...

Looks alright, But I'm sorry to jump on the bandwagon and say you should have taken stuff apart more, and done the pieces sperately.

yes i could have PCed it but hey the paint that is on there is used on logging trucks/trailers. it costest about $500cdn a gallon (the stuff i used was left over) and yeah i could have taken everything apart and masked it off but when i'm done i bet you wont even notice one bit. and as for the paint on the threads it realy isn't a big deal the very small amount of paint on there will come off.
thanks for the coments.

i'll have more pics later tonight.

01-03-2006, 05:25 PM
looks good, i spray painted the frame on my lakota and with lots of clear coat it holds up strong.

yeah, it will come off when you go to torque on your lugnuts and ruin the threads man. If that paint cost that much cdn money, why not get it pc'd instead and have a decent looking bike instead of something that is just going to chip off. You say the paint on the threads will just chip off, then that must mean the paint on everything else will do the same. I'm not being rude or mean, just stating my opinion and factual information.

It's hard to get things powdercoated up here in B.C Lot's of people have never heard of it, and the ones that do do it charge insane prices for it. I went and bought my own powder coating setup because I do alot for other people, but for a guy that does it maybe once a year it's not worth it.
Anyway, I think all the parts look great! And if that is the paint I'm thinking of, that is used for industrial use, then it should hold up just fine.

i painted my 400ex frame on year couldnt afford pc.... i used the car touch up paint...about 5 cans, held up for 1 season of mx, under roost, sand and power wash, i was impressed, still not as strong as pc

01-03-2006, 09:17 PM
I got my frame and subframe pc'ed gloss black for 75$. cant beat that, shure they missed some spots in the corners and crevices, but I touch them up with a brush.

damnmit i finally pick a color for my frame that ive only seen a couple times and now freaking everyone is getting white frames  oh well

im not aginist the painting but seriously you should really FULLY disassemble your parts and yes your supposed to mask off threaded areas and BEARINGS i mean come on man you freaking paint your a-arm bearings, you got over spray on the spindle (or knuckles w/e you wanna call them) yea you can get it off but hell why not just finish taking the stuff apart to begin with it would have been alot less trouble yes NO MATTER what kind of paint you use you still need to sand and prep the parts (espesically that oiltank)

good luck tho

if its painted right it'll hold up, I painted my banshee with ppg paints used a expoxy sealer and 7months of xc riding and it still looks good

correct, when proper prep is followed, and good quality paints are used and also the correct TYPE of paint, it can hold up extremely well.

You need to get some of the clearcoat for ATV's and MX bikes.

Oh yeah, you should have taken the items apart more:cool:

Ok lets not beat the dead horse now all the over spray is GONE and if i'm not worried about then why should you be? The oil tank was well preped just like the swinger and frame and a-arms. sanded with 320 grit. The bearings are now repacked with greese

I said in my last post that all the paint woudl be taken off. Not by torquing the nuts down but by striping the paint off. If you were to look at them at this point in time there isn't anything on the wheel studs.(the loc-tite was harder to get off than the paint:rolleyes: ).

i think he did a damn good job man, maybe some white fenders and that bike will look sick. what kind of exhaust system do you have?

I would try to take the hub nuts off and paint them a diffrent color. think it looks tacky all one color.

But other than that it looks great, interested to see how it holds up.
