i am thinking of building a quad again a 400ex based bike not going for performance right now just want a bike again and somethoing that can pull a wheelie or 2 and so a little jumping

i jusdt got ahold of a 87 kx125 motor that needs a piston, rings, hone, reeds and a water impellar i have all the electrical and most of the chassey built a full rearend and front end parts are in the mail but if i lighten some things on this do you think it would be able to keep with some stuff like 300exs and blasters and such?

alot of my friends keep telling me its going to suck and stuff but im not really too sure about it anymore because of them downing it but im making everything so its completely changable and nothing is permanent just LMK what you think on it

I'll sell you my quad. Looks rough, I am alot better at mechanical stuff than details. I just tell ppl after I woop them in a race "All go, No show"

wasnt asking to buy a quad asking what you thought of a 125 fullsize quad im only about 110 lbs so im thinking it shouldnt be that bad gearing will be tough but i think i can get it

I was trying to desipher you first poast.

are you saying put a dirbike engine in a 400ex frame.

if so, hybrids are a pain in the rear to build up. and spell... lol

not really only because the chain sprockets and shifter already all clear everything and i have most of a 400ex already so al ill need to do is just make the kicker clear but i know what im going to do already with that but im asking if you think it would be able to keep upo with 300ex's and blasters and stuff

I think it would do pretty good, I have a kx125...Are you gonna be able to clear the pipe?? You probably wont have good top speed though becuase you'l probabyly have to do a lot fo gearing to get some good low end wheelie power.

Well I raced a mildly done 1999 RM 125 with my 400ex which just had bolt on engine mods. I beat it by about 3 quad lengths. Now put another 150lbs on the dirtbike to make it a quad.

So judging by the year, its going to be a pointless build-up. that engine will be slow, poorly ratio'd tranny, and not too mention will still handle like a 400ex.

I woudn;t go by years, cuz I have a 93 kx125, adn I can keep up with or beat all the newer kx's. But, you might be right, and yea, a quad is a lot heavier. So I dunno, it'd be better if you could get a hold of a 250, but then it would't be too much of a hybrid. I dunno. Go get a CR500 motor:D 500 2 stroke, that'd keep up with anything.

i have a 91 kx 250 motor in a blaster frame ,,, eats modified banshees and alot of others all day long ....honestly its really to fast to do anything with besides go straight .

get a kx250 motor them things kick butt

I rode one the other day with an 8ounce fly wheel weight and I couldnt tell it was on there it had good low and top end

hmm im still thinking of doing it and yes my pipe fits right in the frame pretty good i just have to make a clamp on tab for it and im only using the 125 powervalve motor because i got it for free other wise i would have done a YZ 400 or YZ426 motor in it
:ermm: and i like the way the 400ex's handle

Rat it should work pretty good. Just lighten the quad as much as you can if you aret gonna jump much. You are pretty mechanically inclined so i would have that motor as worked as possible like a bore piston the works. To help pull the weight of a quad. Plus if it blows up not that big of a deal to fix.

im bringing in the cylinder to hone tomorow in voc sloth and im beadblasting some parts but i changer my mind about the pipe im thinking about making something like a 250R pipe how it has a looooooonnnggg reach to the frame then wraps around wasn't thinking of burning my leg when i mounted up the pipe lol i may do that thou make areach for the rest f the pipe to fit properly :p

well it would definetly be neat. But for the extra cash I would much rather go pick up a 250 motor. way more fun, not always lacking power. Then agian I cant stand loseing EVER. lol. so that always gets in the way of the way I think.

i had a '89 KX125 and i could keep up to a stock 99 CR250. it would even break loose on dry pavement.

ok that makes me feel a little better the motor will not be stock either im going to port polish and get a new wiseco piston and ring will have my own custom pipe too it should move a little im trying to lighten everything as much as possible so im using a stock aluminum swinger and carrier trying to save weight and im going to make my own subframe light and thin like a YFZ subframe but with an extra bar like a YFZ 6 point sub

see if you can dig up some old dyno charts of it, and see if it has atleast 17ftlbs of torque, and around 24 hp, then make your decision

I'm going to say don't put too much into it, like just try and get it bolted up so you can ride it, and see how it feels. But here's what I'd suggest, get that 125 all cleaned up and sell it or trade it for something bigger.

They put 85 motors in 250rs and such, so anythings possible.

I would almost say you would be better off with a 250 motor but really, if you have your gearing spot on and you could get a company to build you a pipe I belive it should run fine.

get some pics up when you start working on it!

i have seen some littl e85cc motors in 250r frames that rip. in fact at earlywines yesterday there was one. i think a 125 motor would be awesome. prolly not much of a trail bike but would be pretty quick if it was geared right. my bro is thinking of doing a 250f motor in a 400ex frame for a blaster class racer adn the 125cc 2 stroke is the 250 4 stroke equal. i think it would work great, i would like to ride it.

i have pics of some things finished already but they are on my cell phone ill definitely start taking some when i get this looking a little more like a quad and not like scrap tubing :)

im honing the cylinder in votech and im making my own pipe all i have to do is extended one part before the pipe gets large in diameter but then again 250rs have that long reach also im making it kind of like a 250r pipe but a little different and the silencer im thinking of making come out right under the seat because im making my own lighter subframe and changing everything else so i might as well put my own little kick into it

im going to be running stock modified 450R aarms AC bumper 400ex spindles hubs rotors calipers etc.

the electrical is going to be simple i just need some mounting tabs for the CDI and coil

as for fenders i have 2 options i have white Z400 fenders for kawasaki and i have a set of stock red 400ex fenders

lots of decisions to make on this project lol kind of driving me nuts but its going to be fun to build and ride:devil:
