Pappy

naaa, Cody wanted to be first so Kevin would have to worry about timing the jump so they were both in the air at the same time.

yes this is in my yard, it was still muddy in the woods so we did not do much there on our course.

i aint cool, im just a dad enjoying my kids:p (sure beats the hell out of sitting at a soccer game tho:devil: )

What's Cody riding nowadays? I know a while back you were looking at something larger, maybe a blaster, or possibly a 400EX with a blaster engine. Did you ever make a decision?

Pappy
01-04-2006, 12:49 PM
im afraid i might as well start wearing panties because i cant seem to make up my mind:chinese:

he is just at a certain size where nothing fits him. he rides a yfz and my r, runs the wheels off his 90 and a 300ex would just be too much of a headache. a blaster...pos so i wont even bother with it.

id love to build an all out custom yfz chassis with a electric start yzf250 thumper for him.

01-04-2006, 12:59 PM
I also gathered up some ppl n rode New Years Eve. We had way more mud then that though. Too much to bring a camera

U ever think about making that a triple triple? Looks like there is enough room

Also ive been wanting to ask u if we will have some rides at Breezewood this summer. I missed the last ride due to a broken bone.

Pappy

we will be having more fun then a hobo with a hamsamwich at breezewood this year.

My buddy had a 240 blaster when we were 12, and he manhandled the thing. You should definitely go for it, I think hes being held back by the 90.

wilkin250r
01-04-2006, 02:04 PM
What are you looking for in a quad? Horsepower, handling, reliability, or the ever-popular best of all worlds?

Why would the 300EX be a headache?

A 300EX or 250X would probably be a nice choice. They don't have quite the suspension of a 400EX, but can be upgraded to certainly be better than the 90. A blaster could be made to have more horsepower, but you'd have all the typical 2-stroke problems when you start modifying it for significantly higher output, both with reliability AND the problems associated with a narrow powerband.

The 300EX can be made darn fast, and still reliable. Plus, when you get into suspension upgrades, they seem to handle better than the blasters.

01-04-2006, 02:13 PM
looks good, i wish i was riding when i was that young

By the way, get the outcast, get a Mojave. Lurch(member on here) has a siiiiiiiick one.

sorry i didnt mean to bust on the 300ex, but ive thrown a leg over a few of the thumper bikes 250cc range and the power delivery is what i believe he will need. im not going to hold him back when he wants to hit big jumps and i want the new technolgy getting him there.

im still leaning towards a full hybrid, based on the yfz chassis as it fits him better them the 450R.

yeah thats real cool. im thinking yfz due to the seat height tho...

wilkin250r
01-04-2006, 03:41 PM
Well, yeah. Of course the 250 dirtbikes are going to have better power than the 300EX.

But if it's power you want, why go with a YFZ/250 hybrid? Why not just go with the standard YFZ motor?

I already know the answer to that question. Because there is a such thing as too much power.

I'm not so presumptuous as to tell you what Cody needs, or how much is too much. But I would imagine, for his size, he doesn't need much more than about what a stock 400EX pumps out, and a 300EX is certainly able to upgrade to that kind of power.

Now, if there are displacement limits that you're looking at, or the better suspension of the YFZ, or if the YFZ chassis just fits him better, then those are issues certainly worthy of consideration. However, if you're looking at enough power to get where he wants to be, in a chassis size he can handle, the 300EX is certainly capable of satisfying those requirements, for much less than the cost of a custom hybrid.

I think he is worried about the quads weight if he wrecked. With the 250 motor it would make it lighter and he may not get hurt as bad if he wrecked and it landed on him. Also w/the lighter motor it would be easier for him to manuver it because iit wouldnt be so heavy.

01-04-2006, 04:34 PM
No because, you cant race a 450 in the a 91-300 air cooled class:scary:

400exrules
01-04-2006, 04:36 PM
maybe you should wait a couple years and get him a yfz and work with him till you are both confident with it(safety wise), and get him used to it and then you could let him ride it how he wants

theirs a kid over on yfzcentral that is a 13y/o and has a yfz. but he might be really tall, idk

Pappy
01-04-2006, 05:34 PM
waiting wopuld only serve to delay the development of his riding ability.

he has cleared all our jumps on my 450R, but i wont allow him to do it that often.

when a 100 pound rider trys to make a 400 pound quad "correct" in the air things can go bad quick. that is the reason for wanting something that i know he can handle. the power is an after thought, he knows how to use what he needs when he needs it!

01-04-2006, 06:54 PM
Just a thought have you thought of decreasing the CC, I don't know if there are kits, but you could get like a 450 engine and make it smaller?

I like the idea of getting a 250 fourstroke and putting it in a bike. Another thought was the 250X/300EX 350X conversion stuff?

Just had to mention these things incase you hadn't thought of them.

Pappy
01-04-2006, 07:00 PM
to be honest, i can make a YFZ chassis pro quality suspension wise for as much as i could a 300ex. the 300ex is just so dated, and with newer technolgy out there i really dont want to mess with it. a crf250r e start or a yzf250 e start would do much better in stock trim then a built 300ex engine IMO.

ill get something going as soon as i slow down some

Pappy
01-04-2006, 08:11 PM
if i keep delaying this, he can just take over my R!

Man Pappy you get some awsome pictures, your a good photographer.

Oh, and I saw you in ATVSPORT again, in the questions/comments in the front, I think it was 2 issues ago. You put Cody in there. And signed Kenny Hill, Pappy. LoL

If you just put a smaller motor in there it won't loose to much wieght honestly. It will still be a heavy quad. You could put a 125cc 2-stroke in the 90, unless you don't want to convert him to a 2-stroke. Or fit the 300 or somethin in the 90. Just for like 2 years then get him a 450. I found start out on a machine with power that won't scare you so you KNOW how to use it for all its worth, on the track, trail, and flats, for wheelies, jumping, blah, blah, blah. So build him up slow if you want him to keep kickin @ss out on the track like he always has been.

Oh and we were ganna go riding at St. Joe on new years eve, but my stupid brother 'n law, sister, and their friends decided to go to chicago.

Go spend 1 hour drive, $3 to ride all day, and um..............RIDE!!!!!

Or spend 6 hours in a car, spend $25 cover charge to get in bars and $100 to drink=$125.

Well.................I thought it was stupid. And I wanted to ride cuz its been a while.

Man...I was just browsing through some of these old threads and I just can't believe the difference between then and now! Even though they tell me I've gotten faster, I noticed my style hasn't changed much...lol. I can't wait until I start riding again. The last year has been a real *****, but I think I can still git r done as long as I stay motivated and remember why I started riding in the first place!

With all the quads you build for everyone else , I'm surprised you haven't built yourself one in the last little while.

I keep telling myself that I can't race ... then I get the bug everyone once in a while. I don't really want to race competetively , I'd rather just go out to an XC race and give it a try and do it for the fun of it to see if I could last. I know damn well I'd be the last guy off the starting line ... I've watched too many videos and seen too many pictures of these guys going fullbore into the first corner and watching the machines flip end over end.
Is there a class in the GNCC series that's just for sportmen ... guys that don't really care about winning but rather have a good time?

Pappy
05-28-2009, 09:20 PM
Yeah, there are a few classes in the morning that dont have points and are basically fun classes....

I havent really had a need to build one, I usually have to many in here for reviews and testing that riding one of my own is kind of pointless:p

Cody has been riding, but mainly UTES and some of teh sport models sent in. His KFX hasnt seen any time really since the Powerline GNCC. He has a request in for a new DS450XC:p If they send one, I would suspect he will be wanting to race it
