04 400ex vs. 06 400ex?

The new 400ex top end is not near the old style. It is just the gearing.

the lights, reverse, gearing...that stuff makes a lil difference, but it will ultimately come down to the driver in my opinion.

the 04 deff. will outrun it b/c with reverse on the 06 ur losing some top end because u have shorter gears

why don't you jus race them and tell us.... we could go on for days about which would win for sevral reasons.... the 04 has the edge difinitly......

Assuming equal rider skill, the '04 should win in the end due to taller gearing (15 tooth front sprocket vs. 14 tooth in the '05-'06). Off the line, the '06 will probably take you but it will rev out quicker so the '04 will be faster on the top-end.

i remember reading on here that they also changed the internals of the 05+ tranny, gearing it higher to accomodate the lower drive and driven gear ratio.

The carb on 400ex's is all the same they just made an error in the spec sheet.

yes the 04 and 05 400ex have different gearing. but it is not jsut at the CS. the tranny gearing is different as well. on 99-04's the final ratio in 5th gear is 1.00 to one while the 05-06 have a 0.93 to 1 final ratio. overall the final gearing is about the same even though the CS sprocket is 1 tooth smaller.

My dad has an 05 while my brother and I opted for 04's because you can't beat the look of those bug eye headlights :) Anyway, in any real riding situation, trail, track, or dune, it's all about the rider skill, but in a straight drag race the 05 just barely pulls ahead at the very top end...my bro and I are about to start modifying so we don't have that problem anymore, all the machines are fully stock except for aftermarket bumpers, handlebars and handguards.

why don't you test that out for yourself instead of asking someone? there's no hands down answer. Rider/engine condition/setup all factor in to how it would do.

I raced my friend with an 04 ex this afternoon. The 06 barely has a bumber in front. I took off my pipe and everything to change back to stock and he did the same. We switched bikes and came out witht he same result. But we are both pretty equal in riding. As far as riding goes you can't tell a difference between the two. I went with the 06 for style not perfomance. Perfomance can always be upgraded.

if an 06 is beeting a 03 then the guy on the 03 must really suck.. b/c they 06s are supposed to be alot slower.. they even had it in the reviews... the revierse messed with the gearing

Or you could miss the part of an 04 having alot more time on it. Like everything else it wears down. Now two brand new 400's a 04 an a 06 I would have to think the 04 could get it. I wouldn't believe reviews. Everyone is opinionated.

ya,no sh*t,that means the guy on the 06 is a better rider then the guy on the 03,congrats on figuring that all out for us,everybody give this man a hand
