Well it looks like in a couple of months or sooner I will be selling my 300 and looking for something bigger/faster. I was wondering about 250r's. How often do you have to rebuild the top end, are they worth the money you pay for them, etc. Or should I go for a 400ex, maybe even a 450r. Basically to me performance is 80% of what im looking for and looks of the bike are 20%. What would work for me, I also plan on getting into a little bit of mx racing too. Thanks

well 250rs are almost 20 years old. They are still able to keep up with the current high performance quads, but the fact that they are getting so old and out dated makes the re sale go down so far. If i were you i would sell the 300ex, get and job and save your money. When spring or summer comes around find a nice 04 450r, you will be able to find one for about $4000.

yea i work at a bike shop right now. I make 6$/hour which is not bad. Only problem is I have to pay for car insurance so idk if i can put all that much toward a quad. But yea I want to atleast start by selling my 300ex.

Got nads?

Personally I would save up for a 400ex or 450r or even Z400. 250r's are alot of fun but it you do ride hard that fun ends quickly when you have to rebuild the top end several times in a year. Although it is quite a bit cheaper to do the top end on a 250r. That and then when you consider that the suspension ( Unless it is aftermarket) is not going to be on par with anything newer it may make more sense to buy something newer. Just my opinion though-after owning a 250r for awhile.

I know I couldn't work for 6$ an hour and pay for my insurance too... that's assuming I didn't have any oher bills or a girl...

Get a 250r. Much better power and will outhandle a 400ex anyday.I have had both and 99% of people are faster on a r.Now the 450r might be a different story, but for the price a 250r is a deal in my book:D

If you had to rebuild your 250r several times a year you must not no what you are doing. I use to race a 250r all summer on the same topend and my compression never went down.

Get a 250r over just about anything, unless you can afford a race ready 450r. 450's are not impressive at all in stock form, and neither are 250's. But since you can get a very nicely modded 250r for around 3500, that is definetly the way to go, unless you are rich and can afford the 450. a 400ex or a z 400 or w/e doesnt even compare to a 250r.

Our minimum wage here in MD is like 5 something/hour. Plus im only 16 and my parents will only let me work 8 hours per week because they are afraid I'll let my schoolwork go down the drain:rolleyes: . I guess ill keep a look-out for somthing cheap, and as far a 250r top end replacement its fine with me. Actually I dont mind it at all, lol i did it almost by myself when i was 14 on my yz125, ya just need a owners manual and your pretty much good to go. So you guys think a 250r would be the way to go?

Yea i kno, it seems like to do it right i should get a 450. Do it cheap get a 400ex. Do it half ***** get a 250r( not that the quad itself is bad). I dont know wth to do. Really anything is better than my 300ex.

It's really just personal prefference. If you like the power and feel of a 2 stroke then get the 250r. Depending on your riding you will need to bore it every 6 months-2 years. About every 6 months to a year you should also replace the piston and rings, and check to see if it needs a bore.

yah i was gonna say , and whoever said that a built 250r cant beat a 450r , you have no idea what your talking about, and its very obvious when you would direct some1 to get a 400 over a 250r. A well built 265r with a good port job will destroy any 400ex , or piped 450r. I had my motor down at baldwins on wed. and we were disgusing options for my motor and we decided on a straight 265 with his port job. He told us that with that bore and port job , it would be chewing up piped 450's. If you would like to argue your point a little further and call the 250r a half assed quad , i will give you Marks number and you can tell him yourself you think that a 250r is a pos.

What do you think I would be paying/ month on a 2005 450r, no hrc kit, and if I put 3,000 cash down on it at the dealer? If you dont mind me asking what are you all paying?
