Ok, on a z400 you have 3 settings on the petcock - ON / RES / PRI

Where is the OFF? :huh

there is none, it has a shutoff so when you tip it up or anything it will close and no gas will leak out, that is if i can recall correctly.

Do you know where the shut-off is? If I tip mine on the rear grab bar I get fuel leaking out no matter what I set the petcock to.

really? i havent had a z400 for over a year now, but mine never did that, i would take off the carb and clean it, there might be debris inside not allowing the fuel to be shut off, but someone who knows more might be able to give you better info.

The Petcock has a vacum on off in side. On & Res work on vacum and only when it is runing will allow fuel in to the carb. On PRI It by pass the vacum and lets fuel in the carb all the time.

I have seen some that stop working and let fuel in all the time that could be your problem

You are probably just leaking fuel that is already in the carb, and it is leaking out the bowl vent.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Is it alot of gas leaking or just a little?

It's not just from the carb. It's a good amount.

you might have some dirt in the petcock. carefully take it apart and clean it.

If you tip the quad onto the rear grab bar there will be some fuel that comes out from the carb no matter what you do because of the fuel in the carb bowl coming out the overflow. This is normal to have some fuel come out. the only way to stop that from happening is to drain the float bowl before you tip it up.

The fuel system in the Z is Vacume so as long as you leave the petcock on "ON" you shouldn't have any leaking gas. I never have had and problems with it.

Like other's have mentioned, there is no off and when in the on or res position fuel won't flow because it needs a vacuum. In the prime position fuel gravity flows all the time the floats will let it in.

Has anyone else this set up to fail before? I ask because I have a 98 LTF500 4wd that I went to get on one day and it wouldn't turn over. I'm not sure exactly what happened but the last time I had ridden it apparently for some reason fuel kept flowing into the carb and into the crankcase because the engine was locked tight. I drained the oil and sure enough, a lot of gas.

I didn't have time to pull the carb (a real PITA) and that's been several months ago since and it hasn't happened again.

Just thought I'd point out what happened to me so if it happens to you, it might ring a bell once you hit the electric start and she don't turn over.
