ok so we went riding the day after christmas and everything was going great!!!!! then i took my cousins quad out for a ride...so he decided to take my quad out for a ride. well i cam back early on the ride from his to get a drink and im trying to go back out and find him and he is stalled in the middle of where we ride...so i go and get my brother and we get back there and he said it wont shift into gear....im like WTF? so my brother checked it out and said that i have no clutch.

now my question is....do i need a new clutch now? when u put it in neutral, and pull in the clutch and press the shifter down, it seems to go in fine but when u let out the clutch, u just stay right there. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE?

Sounds like all of the fibers are gone from your clutch disks.

Have you checked the clutch linkage to see if its binding up???

Most likely it's the clutch!

alright so we took the right side crankcase cover off and its not the clutch basket or the clutch disks. im trying to find a pic of where we found the shavings but its not working out right now.

that pic shows where we found the metal shavings. we didnt plsit the cases though. the metal shavings were on the other side of that but when u put ur finger in there.....u can bring ALOT of chavings out of there....what could this be? thanks to sall of u guys that have been helping out.

That little screen is supposed to be there. That should be metal shavings from your cylinder from break in and what not. That is normal, that does not explain the clutch problem. Unless you have a TON of metal shavings in there then something might be wrong. I dont know hard to say without seeing anything.

i know the little screen is supposed to be there but why are the metal shavings supposed to be there? oh yeah and now...it shifts into gear and locks the rear wheels...seems like everything is ok now. i duno WTF is wrong with it.

Like I said the metal shavings are probably there from initial break-in of the engine when it was new. Its better than having them floating around in your oil.

97blaster200
12-30-2005, 10:23 AM
they were floating in oil though?

12-30-2005, 10:25 AM
my guess is that it was somthing stupid mabie. like a bad cable? or mabie you cousing adjusted the clutch cable tension? who knows.

97blaster200
12-30-2005, 10:26 AM
the cable is perfect and the adjustment is good. we just checked it...im getting sick of this sh1t!!!

No, they would be if that screen wasn't there though. The screen catches the metal shavings from your engine break-in, to prevent them from going back into the engine and causing damage.

do you have a picture of the shavings. how thick where they. are they magnetic? ( aluminum)

97blaster200
12-30-2005, 07:58 PM
nah...no pics of the shavings because we dont have a computer hook up fr a our digital camera yet. but one of the shavings is a big chunk out of something. and some other shavings looks like its from a bearing or something. ill check and see tomorrow if they are magnetic.

Sounds like something's wrong in your lower end if you have big chunks of metal in there. But have you checked to make sure your cable is fine? I'm not talking about adjustment, but is the cable splitting?

97blaster200
12-30-2005, 08:13 PM
nope...cable is perfect

Definately. Either get a manual for it and start tearing it apart to see what the problem is, or take it into a shop.

How old is your quad? And have you abused it a lot in the time that you've had it or did you buy it used? Just because your cousin was riding it at the time doesn't mean that he was the one who did the damage. I'm not trying to start a fight with you about it, but sometimes it's not the person's fault. But if he was at fault when riding it, then by all means try to get the money from him for the repairs.

i took the quad out 2 minutes before he rode it....it was PERFECT!!!!! running better than it usually runs. shifting smooth...then he gets on it and breaks it. it has never been abused in any way!

I think me and your cousin have simular luck.:p

not to hijack this thread. but my quad sometimes finds false nutrals moastly 2nd to 3rd. I shift it. but not quite enouf. because it makes a horible grinding sound then clicks into gear. My guess would be wornout shift forks, but god I hope not! I dont have the time to rip this thing apart now. I'm thinking of buying a billit shifter hopefully making my shifts more positive.

You better get something better than a clymer manual if you plan on splitting the cases, they do not show near enough information for the bottom end disassemble and reassemble procedure

Already did it last summer and yeah it basically only has them showing when they take the motor apart but o well

I split the cases to replace the shifter shaft with the Clymer and everything went great. I just paid close attention to how everything came out:)

One of the scariest things i've done on a quad:p

I once rode a DS 650 that did almost the same thing. You had to let the clutch out almost but not quite all the way, then rev the crap out of it just to get it to move. The guy who owned said he needed to replace the clutch. But Im pretty sure that has already been established here.
