yeah...thats what I want to know, and as far as payscale a marine tech makes quite abit more than any motorcyle tech where I live. But that could differ as to who/where you worked and what part of the country your working in.

Don't know where you are from but around here marine techs start out at $25 hr. You are lucky to make $14hr as a motorcycle mechanic around here

the going labor rate in the Fl. panhandle is about 100 , I am at 90 an hour and plan to go to 95 after the first of the year. I am not sure what the motorcycle shops hourly rate is around here is though. There is alot needed to know about working on boats and I would say about 50% you will have to learn in the field. You also would probably want to go work a marina being they already have a decent clientel built up. You could buy a trailer and work for yourself but unless you have a good array of tools, a decent clientel, and the neccesary hardware to hook-up to these newer motors it will never happen. I usually see about 3 or 4 new "marine truck mechanics" a season but they normaly make it about a season then they skip town I have been working on boats for about 8 years now and just took over the family buisness (Mom And Dad) that have been here for around 24 years. You can view or shop at www.nelsonmarineservice.com if you would like :D have to put a little plug in when ya can:D

well It depends on overhead and how many employees you have, It is only me, my father ,and my mother (dads the city councilman and mom never comes in:ermm: ) you pay your bills and live offthe rest (and you save allot for winter because it is a seasonal profession).Working for a shop I think you get half the labor rate for pay( but remember you have to be working on a boat to get payed < this is what you call billable hours:D )

Around here diesel mechanics is growing like no tomorrow, More or less heavy equitment then trucks, even the truck mechanics are making a decent buck.

The boat guys around here make a absolute killing, we have boats down at the bay running twin blown 502's 45ft long boats list goes on, range from 100,000 dollars all the way to 600,000 dollars, The owners all want to be faster then each other almost every sunday they go out and they will pay anything to be faster then the other guy, if you get into building motors for these guys your going to make some big bucks.

Outboard motors you can make a buck off of preparing them for summer and such.

And what people don't realize is how much money you have to have in tools to be a mechanic.
