Right now i have a 400ex with a high compression piston and a old stage 2 hot cam. i would like to make a quad either a 426 or 440. I do not want to but a new 450 becasue i really don't like either of them i just want more power. Will a 426 really rev that much faster then a 440? Which is faster on top and all the way around? I was going to resleve if went with a 426 or 440 so heat should not be a issue. I MX race ice race and trail ride so i will need to make this motor realible. And i would really like to stick with 11:1 compression. Also which one would do better against 450s in a drag race and on the MX track.

this is an opinion question. everyone thinks one or the other is better so you will get and argument either way. personally i like the 426. i have never been impressed by a 440. i have a 426 and it does rev quicker than my buddies 440, and beats it in a drag race even if we switch quads. Powerwise it is about the same, the 440 just has more torque. i would resleeve and do a 426 and you can always go up to a 440 later on the same sleeve. if you 440, you have to resleeve again if it needs a rebuild so it is cheaper in the long run to do a 426.

So how much would you be looking at to take a 100% stock 400 to a 426 ?

well i work at an MC shop. it depends on how far you want to go. we charge $49 to bore it. if it is stock it would be more since it requires more than 1 pass so about 75 on the bore, about 139 for the piston, 26 for gaskets. Valve seals will run you about 20, a cam is 150, port job is 200, new kibble white valves are 33 each, plu an hours labor to install which is 52. it is how much you want to spend and how far you want to go.

For around $716 you can get
Ross 11:1 piston
new88 mm sleeve (can be bored to 89.5mm)
gaskets
port and polish
3 angle valve job (including disassembly and assembly)
valve seals
new sleeve install and bored to match piston
