both are reliable quad but I would go with the z if you want to go with a up to date quad

The new 400ex's pretty much suck but if you get the 400ex get a 2004 or older model:blah:

no the Z or any quad doesn't have any bad reliability if you take care of it

but the swingarm on the z400 isn't the strongest I would suggest getting a used aftermarket swingarm if you by a Z400

that is just my opinion

No question the Z is a better machine.

Yes, the Z is a better quad then the ex. It has much more power.

z400's are very reliable.... its not like they blow up or anything. and no offense, the swingarm will be strong enough for you since your new... theres no question that z's are better then ex's

i had a hard time deciding over the 2 also. i decided to go with the honda b/c of the name and reputation for reliablity. last honda i had i put 10,000 miles on it and it still ran like new. i know a friend who had an actic cat and couln't keep the thing runnin. they have suzuki motors. its up to you, i dont think you could go wrong either way. the honda handles better then the z

ex if you want low maintenance and torque

z/kfx if you want overall betterness (that a word?)

what else do u have to do to a z400 that you dont to a 400ex?

you have the coolant and stuff to worry about/replace.

not to mention the ex is easier to work on.

if you take your time on both, it's easy. but for the guy with no garage and only a SMALL porch to work on/worry about missing bolts/parts, the ex is better.

i hvae a z and i like it a lot...stock its still pretty close to a moded 01 ex that has mods the handling is quite a bit different though the z sits a little higher but its not much of a difference. my friend rolled mine and the radiator leaks now so i gotta get that fixed. the volt fering where the overflow bolts up was pressed not welded and the front fender knocked it lose and it cracked, but other than that i have had no problems with it. so the choice is easy for me definately teh z.

z is a little bit faster, doesnt run as hot, responds a tad better to performance mods

ex is alot cheaper, parts are cheaper and easier to find...easy to work on. very reliable

i had the same problem when i was choosin which 400 i wanted. i was literally on my way to buy a 400ex and when i was at the dealer they had a kfx and i test drove it and was in love with it. i will admit tho that the kfx is harder to work on and the ex has a little bit better handling tho. otherwise i love my kfx.

only bad things i can think of about the ex, is lack of power compared to everything else, outdated, and awkward spark plug positioning lol

yup the position of the spark plug on the ex is horrendous...it kept me off mine for 2 weeks straight until my toolkit came in for the ex...

otherwise I dont have a single complaint...

My friend was telling me about a kid that had a z400. He said his frame was bent into a "V" shape in the front. What year did they fix the frame on?
