Kill switch was not working.

Has anybody else had problems with the kill switch? When we got to the desert my kill switch was not working. When I would roll up to camp I would be in 1st gear and I would pull the clutch in and push the kill switch to the off position and it would just stay running. I would have to let the clutch out and then it would die. Is that normal? This morning I washed it off and stuff and it would kill it fine when it was in nutral. So should I be able to kill it in 1st gear or does it have to be in nutral?
