If that is the case how could these bikes be that close in a race?

The honda puts out more torque. Torque gets you moving sooner and horspower carry's the higher gears so the honda should have the jump and the yamaha wants to real the honda in.

Thats not the best explanation but its all I can say.

I'm not positive but i thought the 06' honda was making mid 40's horsepower. but i have no clue what the yamaha is. i dont really care either ;)

The '06 is supposed to be 42. It's hard to get an accurate comparison between two bikes unless you put them both on the same dyno.

ATVriders.com will have an 06' test coming out soon. This test is complete. 43 for the YFZ stock is not true. Stock 06' YFZ is 40rwhp and the TRX is close.

From what I usually see, they are very close indeed. The Yamaha usually shows slightly more HP, whereas the Honda usually has slightly more torque. In most races, the difference is very unnoticable..... my TRX can keep up with YFZ's no problem. How you take care of and ride your bike is the biggest thing, as I have beaten both YFZ's and TRX's with more mods than me. The newer bikes these days, Raptor 700, YFZ 450, 450r, ect. ( From what I see) are all very similar as far as speed goes......
