I was dumb and used to smoke. Save me the comments because...well...I know that I brought it on myself. I am wondering if anyone else out there has been in the same situation as me. I didn't quit that long ago, and in the middle of February I need to be able to run 1.5 miles in 15minutes and 30 seconds for my training (going to be a prison guard). Right now I can do it in around 19 minutes (with walking and putting my lungs back into my chest). I was wondering, is there anything else I can do to cut down on time? For those who do smoke, you know what it's like to be coughing up a lung. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I use to smoke 2 1/2 packs a day.
Just keep it up, it will start to get better, and it's also a good reminder of why you quit when your stuggling for air.

take 2 half breaths in and 2 half breaths out. Your old smoking habit doesnt have u running it that slow its because your way out of shape. Like Wilkins said PRACTICE

if you run on a track, try increasing your speed quite a bit for short distances (like 100ft or less) then going back to your jogging pace. do this a lot! that will help increase your speed. if you run on a treadmill, put your incline up a bit (1.5-2 minumum) this will take a lot of the load off of your knees, and give you a better work out. breathing is very important of course, but that was already touched on.

Just start running at a pace the you feel comfortable at and stay at that pace the whole time. You will be surprised how much you will cut down your time.

run stairs, run in the cold, stretch, drink water and keep energy in your body.

This is what I always do. It helps to prevent the that god-awful pain in you side after you have been running for a while. Two quick breaths through your nose, one long breath out of your mouth.

That cramp you just have to run though. For soccer we were supposed to do 2 miles in 12:30 but the best I could do was a little over 13. Thats really bookin it around that track. I started to get those cramps, but when I was in better shape at the end of the year, it was a lot better.

control your breathing. I breath with my steps. I breath in with three steps and breath out with three steps. This really helped me when I was in the Army. I got my 2 miles down to under 12 minutes.

my cousin is in college and runs the 800m, he is always on a real strict diet, he doesnt drink pop at all and i think he drinks a lot of homemade shakes for energy. do a search on running diets or something.

Thanks for the help guys. Yes, I have been way out of shape. My track consists of a path through the neighborhood that I measured with the odometer on my car. Each day I try it, I am able to go farther and quicker. I have started eating better (less pop and junk, more water and health foods). Until now I have never realized how much I have let myself go. Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks again!

Thanks..I was in a light infantry unit, our goal was to score 100% on our PT test. To max the 2 mile run you had to do it in 11:54. Thats a pretty fast past but I did acheive it with some dedication. Most everyone in our unit could do it in under 13 minutes.

Why would anyone want to be a prison guard? Hanging around losers all day would be really depressing!!

Think outside the box. Working for the state has great benefits and pay. They are paying me more per hour to get trained than at any other job I've ever had!

the effects of smoking should go away on their own with time.. you probably need cardio training which will help your eundurance a lot..

if you have time to train you should..

lets say

mon. on a exercise bike or treadmill. go high intesity for a minutes and medium for a minute. alternate for 6 to 10 minutes
but has to be high intesity

wed. medium intensity, walk for 30 minutes on a treadmill w/ incline

fri. same as mon.

sun. same as wed.

just alternate these workouts everyother day and you should notice results
