My top speed on my 2004 was around 62 mph...are you guys talking about no pipe...no mods at all....mine is with a pipe...although I haven't tested out the max speed in a minute...I use my gps in my pocket to get my speed...so not sure on how accurate it is...

400EXtreme
12-22-2005, 06:43 PM
its def high 60s

12-22-2005, 07:17 PM
my 2002 400ex hits only 55 and it will fly all the way up to 55 with the front end up.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I really don't see how that is possible. Not on stock gears anyways. 2005's came with a 14/38 setup versus the '99-'04 15/38. A smaller front sprocket means more low-end, therefore slower top speed. My '04 did 67-68mph stock, now I might be up to 70. Regardless, your '05 is not doing 78 with stock gears. If you do indeed have stock gearing with the mods listed, I would say that your radar gun or gps or whatever is not working properly.

Perhaps my GPS is off or something...or probably me...could have been the terrain I was on, but I think the highest I've been on my stock 2004 is like 63 or 64...been a minute since I did it...

How in the world are you guys getting up in the 70's? I might have been on an incline, but still it seemed flat. I went through all five gears...Wish I had more!!

What have you guys done with the sprockets? Would be nice to have some more speed...? I went to Sand Hollow and my quad was slow!! I saw another 400 out there and he was flyin up this hill like our YFZ's...he said he hadn't done anything to it..just his jetting...his rev box(rdi box)...nothing else...I found it hard to believe, but apparently he might have been telling the truth...

Any ideas on what I can do to increase speed and power without getting into the engine...cams...all the expensive stuff?

I tested a 04 400ex with a fricken radar gun (+/- 0.01mph ) and it goes 55mph.
Theres no way in hells name you are going 60s-70s on a stock EX.
Sorry, the truth hurts.

Its a well known fact that the older ones do 67ish. The new ones are around 61-62.

My top speed on my 2004 with an alba pipe and K&N air filter it was at a minimum 62 MPH...but maybe 63mph...

I have to adjust my jetting..
What do you guys have your jetting set at? What about your fuel/air screw, how many turns...?

I don't mean to be rude by any means BUT, the most the older ones go are like 60mph, and correction on my last post, i tested an 05 400ex.

not trin to be a dick or anything but my honda rancher would do 53. and a bone stock 400 would HAUL A** by me. i have a 05 and when it was completly stock it would do 65mph with 19in tires. now with 22inch tires and some other stuff the reason i know it will do 78 is cause i raced a friend on Z400 that was talkin s*it and said he had his clocked at the strip and we raced and were both bouncin off the rev limiter side my side. i had another friend on a truck that said he was doin 80 and i was pullin away from him, but i dont believe that. if i was gonna guess i would say around 72-75 i had a friend that had a 300ex and it would do 65 next to a polaris. these numbers are from on the road. if you get off pavement its slower.

shaved fenders adds about 5mph. someone told me that and i didn't believe them so i cut my fenders and damn if it didn't. i went from that boy bein faster then me to hangin right beside em

ok it will difinitly not do 78 srry but 78 is kinda a steap lie or estament and 55 is low i've only clocked mine withe a car and it was at 69mph but i'll knock off 4mph jus cuz that is a bad way of getting the top speed so im gonna say around 65 .....55 i no it goes faster than that cuz ya a recon does 48 and i can smoke a recon jus goin to 3rd........

I too clocked a recon with a RADAR gun and it goes just shy of 40mph. Knock off 10mph because thats the worst possible way to clock something.

A stock 400ex will do 78mph.. in the back of a truck.

Radar guns don't lie and their error margin is +/- .01MPH.

Last year when all my 400ex had was a K&N, I went down the fire lanes up north and held it wide open for 3-4min without letting off. When I got done I disconnected the GPS from my chest protector. Results = 68.4 MPH.

Try running a 16 tooth counter sprocket w/ a 36 tooth rear sprocket , that'll give ya the 70+ mph 400ex.

Yeah but it wont pull it very good, and it will take you 3 miles to get up to that speed.

If you guys want to end all of this someone tell me what the Max RPM of a stock 400ex is.

440bigborekit
12-24-2005, 02:30 PM
they do like 67-68 and the stock rev limiter i belive is a 9300 rpm

12-24-2005, 03:21 PM
mine did 68 -sometimes barley reaching 70 depends on whitch way the wind was going my wt it like around 172 lbs i clocked my 400 with a little help of 2 trucks just to make shur and on top of that my neigbhor has a radar gun and clocked me around 69 and all i have on it is uni air filter and balled holeshot tires

400exrider707
12-24-2005, 03:32 PM
Does anyone know for sure what the Rev limit is on the 400's? By the way mods will not make your top speed higher, they just get you there faster. LIke said before only tires, sprockets, and speed limiters will change your overall top speed, so pipes and filters dont make you faster guys.

Something else with the GPSs...it records all speeds, including when you move it with you hand...I would consider a speed that was done on dirt or sand because technically who gives a crap what they go on pavement...

Quads are meant to be off-road....so that is where I would like to see...bone stock means no messing around with sprockets, air filters, tires, anything...Stock...if you were to take it for a ride right off the showroom floor...hehe

Even GPSs are ont completely accurate...Mine is accurate up to like 6ft so you have to wonder what the accuracy is for speed?

the best way would probably to dyno it right? even though its not dirt, but they could control elevation...those are some other things to take into considerations...elevation and settings...sometimes quads are bought in another state from where they are taken out for riding...

heck...who knows...

Like I said...so far mine hits about 63MPH on pipeline road out here in Nevada...not sure on incline or elevation...but thats my top speed...so far..believe me I wish I could go faster...so when I get that feeling..I just hop on my b/fs YFZ 450...

12-24-2005, 08:22 PM
a stock 400ex stops making power in the 8000s rpm.

and is susposed to stop making power after 55mph but still hits the 60s.

TacomaNC4X4
12-24-2005, 08:30 PM
dont know what the max rpm is but when i top it out i get it on the road and go downhill

12-24-2005, 08:44 PM
well a 400ex max rpm is like 9300 rpm but a 400ex stops making power in the 8000s

thats y i put a 13 tooth front sprocket and 18 inch tires on my quad cuz u never hit 65 mph a tracks. traded speed for torq.

The 67 to 68 is the most accurate i have heard but the some engines come off the floor just faster than others. I race at Mobile Dragway and i have 16/38 gears with 19.5 M/T JR. slicks and i hit 78 in the 8th and wide open it will run 84. These speeds are from a dyno so the are dead on.

nope, sorry to tell ya but your wrong there, the new 400 ex's are in the upper 60's,I have tested it with a gps, radar gun and beside a car and they were all above 65 and that was a stock o6 400ex

I would agree with the 65 on the newwer models. when mine was stock it did between 63-66. Not real for sure we was going by the two cars beside me. I'm 140. With my pipe I doubt I go near that fast but it sounds like it.

i would think the 400z could have some top end speed only if you know how to degree the cams in for top end. the IN cam and the EX cam

a stock 400ex stops making power in the 8000s rpm.

Yeah, it goes "off the cam" but that doesn't mean it can't rev higher. It just won't pull as hard.
