Pappy,
I have a set of inexpensive aluminum rims(american racing) for my car that I have been thinking about having powdercoated. The clear coat on them is cracking/chipped and the aluminum is starting to corrode so I'm looking to freshen them up. Will they require any special prep work? I'm looking for the most durable pc finish I can get in something black/charcoal. Any suggestions? Thanks

These are the wheels

are you seeing the clear pc flaking?

they can be stripped and coated most any color you would like

In some areas the clear is flaking and just cracked in others. I was considering the stealth black but I'm wondering if the texture would be a problem for easy clean up? Would a smoother glossy finish be better?

it will really depend on the texture of the actual rim finish. stealth seems to clean up fine, i will be doing my truck rims in that color once i need new tires:p

They are pretty smooth for the most part. They are basically polished around the edges and a fine brushed look on the rest. I guess if you are putting it on your truck wheels that's all the recommendation I need. I think the stealth black would look good on any nice set of wheels. I'm guessing shipping from n.ohio to you would be pretty pricey right?

im geussing around $18 a rim for shipping. but since you have been a great site member since forever, you get them here and pay for stripping and ill coat them for free!

Wow! Now that's I deal I can't pass up. I'll get them sent out just after the 1st of the year. I just have to have the tires removed and pop the valve stems out. The wheels also have a small trim ring that covers the lug nuts that I would like to pc also.(same color) Any rough estimate on how much the stripping would be?

Thanks Pappy. You da man!:macho

the company that does my stripping is pretty reasonable. i will ask them what to expect and reply.

if you can hold off fo r a few weeks i will have my new oven here and could get them done then!

Sounds good. I'm not in a real hurry have the wheels done since they won't be going on the car until spring. That will give me time to recover financially from christmas anyhow.:o
Thanks again.:D

BTW-I'll be picking up that new akraix video with cody asap. Sounds like an awesome vid according to your post.

Yeah I checked out the sneak peek video on their website and it looks like a fun flick. I even caught a glimpse of you and Cody on the mini Pred. My kids will get a kick out of seeing someone their age on one of these movies. They have become big fans of Cody since they have seen what he can do in your posts plus having owned one of his quads.

I'm almost ready to have the wheels pc'ed.(just waiting on profit sharing) It should be around the middle of Feb. or so if that'll work for you. What would be the best way to ship the wheels? Would it be best to box and ship the wheels individually? Also any news on how much the stripping would cost? Just so I have an idea about how much it will cost.

Thanks
Scott

i honestly cant say until i get my hands on them, i cant imagine more then $30 a rim depending on the coating.

mid february should be fine, by then the new oven should be installed and in use:D

That'll work. I didn't think it would be too much but I just wanted to be able to tell the wifey how much it'll cost so she isn't shocked when I pay the bill.:o

I saw your post about your career situation. Best of luck to ya.;) I may be starting a little pc work myself soon. I'm hoping to have enough money to start on a small setup with profit sharing so I may have a few questions for you later. I was thinking of getting a budget setup just for personal use but I doubt I'll be able to do big items like the wheels. I'm still not sure which hobby gun to chose though. I'm planning on picking up a samll household type oven to start with and building my own booth.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep you updated.

Pappy- Looks like I'm ready to have the rims pc'ed. I have the money in hand to take care of everything. I just need to go get the tires unmounted and valve stems removed. Should I box each rim individually for shipment?

Pappy
02-15-2006, 12:12 PM
it would be easiest for me when i ship back if they were individually boxed:D

That's what I thought. Just wasn't sure if maybe there was a better way. I'll post here when I get them boxed and ready to ship. I should have them ready after this weekend.

I may have a 250r frame for you next.:D

Just an update. Had a little chaos around here but it's all straightened out now. I got the boxes I need and I'm getting the tires/valve stems/weights removed from the rims tomorrow. Will the inside of the wheel get pc'ed also? I also need to get your shipping info.

Oh and how should I go about paying for the return shipping and the stripping?

I got the wheels all boxed up and ready to ship. My wife is going to take the truck in tomorrow(Thurs) and send them out via UPS. They should be there in a couple days or so. I'll toss a note in there with the color. There will also be 4 small trim rings that cover the lugs that I would like pc'ed stealth black like the wheels also.

I can't wait to see what they are going to look like. Do you have any tips I can give the tire place for mounting the tires without messing up the pc?

Thanks for everything Ken:devil:

the best thing to do is tell them that they are coated so try not to tear them up. usually its no big deal, and the only areas that can get tore up are behind the lip of the rim so its unseen.

That's what I thought. Either way I'll be biting my nails while they mount the tires.:o

Just noticed the wheels got to you pretty quick according to the tracking info. It was cheaper than I thought to ship them also.

Anyhow, just wondering if you got the bumper I sent for quadfamily?

Oh and could you please post pics of the wheels before you send them out too?

Thanks a million.
Scott

Sounds great. I think the UPS guy would be much more impressed with them when you are finished. They don't look so great right now. The pics aren't really a big deal but I figured since so many have viewed the thread maybe I should show them off. :o

John(quadfamily) will be happy to hear you got the bumper too. :D

The bumper was sent seperately monday. You may not have received it until today.

Did you get the 4 trim rings for the wheels also?

Pappy
03-28-2006, 03:36 PM
bumper arrived today. all i have recieved was the 4 rims, and now the bumper.

300exOH
03-28-2006, 09:35 PM
There should've been 4 small aluminum rings about 5" across that cover the lug nuts in the box with one of the wheels. They were taped together and wrapped in the note I put in to specify the color. You may have to fish through some packing material.

I'll let quadfamily know you got the bumper.

whew! I was worried I lost them. I looked all around the garage and even in my truck.

Will the pc affect how the trim rings fit on the wheels? Does the pc go on pretty thick? I probably should've asked this sooner.:o

Pappy
03-29-2006, 10:57 PM
it shouldnt. being that these are thin, the amount of powder used to cover them will not be such a thickness that problems should arise.

300exOH
03-29-2006, 11:16 PM
Thanks. I didn't think it would be a problem but I thought I'd better ask anyhow.

Can't wait to see em. The plastic center cap that goes in the middle of the rings are black/chrome and I plan to put chrome valve stems on too. Should be a nice combo with the stealth black.

I think they'll look really good. They were kind of plain with the clear coated aluminum. They should match the car much better since there's no chrome/aluminum on the car. She'll just be black and red. My 2 favorite colors.

I'll post pics when I get them on the car too.

This is basically how they will look. Forgive my cheap photochop job.:o

Just let me know what I owe for everything and I can paypal it to you right away.

You did do the rings black also right?

Pappy
04-07-2006, 04:44 AM
yep the rings are done, i just packaged them so i would loose them etc.

300exOH
04-07-2006, 08:36 AM
Awesome. Sorry to be such a pest about the rings.:o I did some photo editing and found that they wouldn't look very good if they weren't coated to match the wheels.

How bad were they when they came back from stripping? I figured the pits in the aluminum would be pretty bad.

Let me know what the total is.

Thanks again for everything. I can't wait to see how they look on the car.

BTW- I bumped into a guy on another forum I visit asking about powdercoating his wheels so I gave him your contact info. I couldn't find your phone number to give him though.

Haha. Yeah. We usually drive my truck on the weekends but probably not this weekend. The wifes pretty excited about having her car look good again. The factory wheels just don't cut it. As long as the have the tires I want she'll be rollin this weekend.:macho

Finally got the tires on and the wheels mounted on the car. Pics aren't the best but I'll get more when the weather lets me.

I had a bunch of compliments on the wheels at the tire shop. In fact they want me to drive the car over there and show it off. I just took the rims and had the tires mounted/balanced so they haven't seen them on the car.

The only issue I ran into was the pc made the center bore a bit tight. If you powdercoat another set you may want to consider masking that area off. I was able to get them on without too much effort though but it was a snug fit.

Overall I'm very happy with the results. Now I just need a BK Performance sticker on the window to let everyone know who pimped my ride.;)

Thanks. They turned out exactly the way I hoped they would. I'm digging the nascar look it has now.

The center bore wasn't too big of a deal. I could've sanded it a bit and made it easier but luckily I didn't have to. The tire place I went to did a good job with them. Not one scratch.

My wife drove the car to work today so I'm anxious to hear what her co-workers think of them.
