are any of you running an aftermarket rev box? any good ones out there? they seem to be around $100. i'm wondering if it's worth it to spend the $$$ on a Vortex.

Don't bother with the cheap boxes. The Vortex and Dyna FS are good but not sure if there worth the money.. I have the Vortex and I like it. The stock rev limiter is too low for my riding style. However, you don't want to be over reving the motor with an afermarket cdi.

I dont know about dyna or vortex but if you wanna spend a little more cash and go with the crf ignition conversion that would be the way to go. I put that in my R along with a hotcams stage 2 and my motor absolutely rips. Since I've put those mods in I can pull holeshots over YFZs no problem.

how much did it cost for the CRF conversion?

Trail Tech list CRF conversion for $535 with no lights or fan.

The cheap ones are the only way to go for the price...I got a new white bros for $72 bucks off ebay...vortex and dyna aren't worth it in my opinion...if anything as said before the crf ignition is somethin worth looking into for the absolute best.

Do the cheap ones add a noticeable power gain? Anything better than the stock one. I've been wondering the same thing about the cheap ones but I didn't want to purchase one and it didn't work or worse mess something up on my quad. And when you change out a rev limiter, do you have to have motor work like aftermarket pistons etc. or will they enhance your stock motors rev limit.

Most of the rev boxes close to the $100 range claim 2 full horsepower throughout the rpm range, whether this is true or not I dont know I'm not using a dyno. Seat of the pants feel: yes it adds 2 horsepower. Thats not the reason to buy one though, I have my 450r geared down for xc racing, so I'm bouncing off the stock rev limiter constantly, this is where the aftermarket rev box shines. You can go farther in each gear which really helps. This will help a stock motor or built one either way. It will be more noticeable on a 450r that has been geared down or motor work done rather than a bone stock.

Hey thanks alot man you really helped me out alot on that subject. But now on another subject since you seem to know way more about these quads then I do. When you change out a piston for instance in my 05 I still have everything stock except the HRC kit. But I want a 12:1 piston, does any fabrication have to be done like grinding down of the heads when you up the size of a piston or is it a quick swap job of pistons when you change them out. I also want a port/polish done too but I'm clueless of how these things work on a quad. Care to shed some light on a lamen at these things. Thanks

you do not have to do anything to the head. just drop the piston in and go. Port and Polishing doesn't do much unless you have everything else done to the motor like cams, exhaust, etc.

Like he said, but I run a 13:1 JE thats what I would recomend highly over the 12:1 for a better power increase for the same price more than likely.

Can you run 93 octane pump gas with that 13:1 JE piston? I was told that you couldn't that was the only reason why I wanted to get the 12:1. If you can run 93 octane then I will get the 13:1. Thank fellas for the help.

C&D sells a thermal coated JE 13:1. They say you can run pump gas with it.

add a octane booster just to be safe if you go with the 13-1.

I just bought a rev box from Janssen Racing. They claim 1200 rpm gain and it adjusts the timing somehow--I'm not really sure. The box I got also lets the stock cooling fan function properly--apparently some aftermarket boxes don't. This is what they told me when I ordered it. It was $150 I haven't rode with it yet, but will let you guys know how it works.
