I am in the process gathering parts to turn my 400EX into a 440. What is the prefered cam for the 440? I read the Hotcam stage 1 is not recommeded for bore over 426. Why not? I want to keep the strong bottom end in my EX. I mainly ride amateur MX and trails.

Any recommendations?

I run a stage 3 12.5 to 1 440 with 15 /38 geaing & heavy ply agressive 22" s out back I dont think youll lose any bottom with any of the hotcams but a stage 2 is good for everything while 1 is more for the bottom & a 3 is is mid to top it takes a few revs to wake this one up but with higher compressoin youll have a screamer top to bottom gearing helps too , but i like to go fast ,real fast but it takes $$ to find out what you like try some things.

Would it make a difference if it's bored to 440cc's or stroked to 440cc's?

I will be installing the Wiesco 440 kit, which just increases the bore. I want to continue using pump gas, so will go with the 11:1 comp piston. When I get the head off, I am planning to clean up the intake/exhaust ports and not do any major head work. Will the stock carb handle the added displacement? I know jetting will have to be changed. Also, I think I will go with the stage 2 hotcam. Anybody have a similar set up and can give me a start point with the jetting.

a stroked motor will give you gobs more torque due to the increased mechanical advantage.BUT strokers do not like rpms..usually.a bore would be cheaper though.:)

My question was refering to what CAM compliments a motor stroked to 440cc's vs a motor bored to 440cc's;)

Oh man you should really take the time to learn how to do it! Its so simple! Main jet is one of the easiest to check. Look at the bottom of the carb. There is a big cap on the bottom, unscrew it off, then there is your main jet right there. The main, pilot, needle, and air screw should all have been adjusted for your mods dave.

Yeah I would say so since a 440 bore and a 440 stroker make different power characteristics. It really all comes down to how your going to use the quad, and how you want it to react.

and if your gonna check out your jet size. make sure you turn off your fuel first. and run it out of gas or just let it leak out. not to much in there. i think the jet is a 1/4' size socket

I will plan to keep my stock 400 carb when I add the 440 kit. I see a lot of guys are running 450 carbs. What is the advantage of this?

Also with the 440 kit, I have heard that I should add a bigger oil resevoir. Are there overheating problems with the 440? Should I also upsize the oil cooler?

I am running a web 450/51 all around cam thats what my friends at LRD suggested. Anyway with 11to1 comp. it pulls strong from bottom to top. RIDE RED
