In the mid 1970’s, International Championship Events (ICE), which is headed up by president, Gary Dunsford, started the World Championship Ice Racing Series. Back then, the only machines involved in the ice racing series were motorcycles. In the early 1980’s, quads were given an opportunity to race and have been a big hit with audiences ever since.

Now with the 2005/2006 series underway, quads appear to be outnumbering bikes on the ice.

Round three of the 30th annual World Championship Ice Racing Series was held at the Everett Events Center in Washington State. The quad classes included Amateur/un-studded, Amateur/semi-studded, and the ever popular Unlimited Outlaw Quad class, where anything goes.

There were also bike classes and Extreme Kart classes that included Barstool racers, which were very entertaining to watch.

There were a lot of local racers that came out to participate, including the Cycle Barn Race Team and the Sandvig Race team.

Before the races began, all the racers made their way onto the ice, and were formally introduced by the announcer.

The bikes were the first ones on the ice to start the qualifying heats.

These two riders collided in the first corner and slammed into the wall. Luckily neither rider was injured.

:D

My Mac Tool dealer was there - he's racing in the new pro bike class (Donny Steward) on a Yamaha. That should be him up there ^^^ on the blue #16! I've been wanting to try a few of these but there are only 2 races that come remotely close to Iowa.

The other thing holding me back is time & money.

Is that unstudded class worthwhile?

The qualifying heats went by very quickly, with only four laps per qualifying round, it seemed that the heat ended just as they were starting to get interesting.

One of the most entertaining classes to watch was the Extreme Karts.

Raptorchick

There was a lot of contact between the karts, resulting in numerous spinouts.

Another class that was entertaining to watch was the Amateur/unstudded class. These guys put all they had into making their quads go with what little traction they could get on the ice.

During the final heats, more and more quads were on the track at the same time. At one point there were approximately 15 quads lined up on the track.

There was a lot of close contact going into the first corner.

Despite all of the bar banging going on in the corners, there was only one crash where the rider wasn’t able to keep the rubber side down.

Thankfully the rider was not injured, and the race was restarted.

I think those three had more fun then I did. The bikes were even because, they had no traction. The 400ex won, but it took 3 laps of good riding to pass the 250ex.

In the ice breaker class, I had the traction to get going fast, but not enough traction, to use the speed. In the heat I think I spun 6 or 7 times in 4 laps.

If it comes here next year I am going to nut up, and run pro.

Thanks Tractor~
I've been doing a lot of thinking and checkbook addition (subtraction :( ) the past week and I've decided that I'm gonna do shocks right now instead of try to cram together a half-azzed ice quad. I want to be ready for XC in the spring. The tour stops by St Paul in Mid-end January and I think I've decided to go there with the fam and check it out.... They way I'm planning it I'll run full studs next year (some indoor ice prolly a little outdoors too) and see what I can do. I don't think I could be happy pushing the go button and not getting anywhere!

Z on ice.... NEXT YEAR!
