will it hold up to mx abuse or does it need to be gusseted?

It should be gusseted. Do a search, there are plenty of pics on where to gusset the stock frame.

Gusseting a stock frame is a necessity for mx'ing.I have a stocker that is gusseted and it still broke in other areas.Keep a close eye on all the motor mount bolts,I have a feeling a couple loose ones contributed to some of the cracks in mine.
