Go into your control panel, display, effects, and try to change your icon appearance in there.

Dan, What the hell are you doing with that many Icons on your desktop anyways? My eyes would go crazy. Yeah, that is the only way I can think of where you can change that.
Are you running any themes?

You guys are a ton of help. I'm sure he has already tried the display settings.

You would think it would be there, but it's not. There is a very specific setting for it, and it's extremely obvious what it does, but the trouble is finding it. It's in an absurd place.

Go to Control Panel, and go to "System" or "System Properties".

Click on the "Advanced" tab, and click the button for "Settings" under the "Performance" section.

Check the little box labeled "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop".

You're welcome. ;)

Now where's my free copy of the Fallout?

When I change that setting my text box of the icons stays tranparent. The only thing that changes is a slight shadow behind the words. I don't have the white box like Dan has no matter how I change the above setting:confused:

It's not always a "white" box. The color of the box depends on your background color.

I found this on the Net. Another XP user was complaining about the white boxes showing up after they put a new background image on their desktop. The "Drop Shadows" settings didn't fix the problem but this did:

"Right click on desktop. Click down to Properties, then open the Desktop tab. Click on the Customize Desktop button, then open the Web tab. Delete everything in the Web Pages box except, My Current Home Page. Press OK, then Apply, and maybe OK again. Possibly restart for settings to take effect. Should solve the problem. Good luck,"

u have too many folders on that desktop..save them to a bigger folder, not to the desktop lol..is shouldnt be anything more then a couple icons and then a folder that when u click on it, it opens up to a lot more...like i have a Star on mine which is the big folder with all my pictures and documents i have in it...its just easier to find it that was as well...if ur confused by me saying this then im sorry lol
