i'm looking into a cam. i've read alot about the HRC. i'm looking at doing some MX races and a little sand dune riding. would the HRC be a good choice or is there something else that would be better?

I would get either the HotCams stgII or an '02 or '05 CRF450 cam. The HRC is more of a top-end cam.

depends on if you want to get into shorter valve guides and better springs and cam timing gear..
but imo check out www.webcamshafts.com

The ? you need to ask yourself is do you like to ride in high rpm range alot. If you do then the hrc should suit you fine. If you like th lug the motor a bit then the 02 crf cam would be a better choice for you.

Best thing to do is find someone with that cam. If you both have basically the same setups on your atv's minus the cam then you really see if you want a high revving cam or one with more low-end.

I have the Hotcam stg2 and it pulls really hard at the top end. Its perfect for MX i think. I have friends with pro GNCC race quads and they say that mine pulls harder than theirs soo you take your pick but i would recommend the HCam 2 to anyone.

Just curious about that one. My freind really wants to use web in his motor. But what I was told is with web you really should change other things as well. Is this true.

I know if you use a honda cam [hrc or crf] you can just drop it in.

The Honda cams and the Hot Cams are drop in...the Web and Johnson cams are not.

The Hot Cams II would be my choice for MX and it is about $50 cheaper then the Honda varieties.

So you can install the 02 CRF cam with no other modifications? I'm looking for an XC cam with alot of low to mid.

Yes you can install that cam on its own. If you add exhaust and jetting you'll see more performance.

The HRC, HC, some Webs, and CRFs are drop in cams, but you will need to check valve clearances. I love my 02 CRF and works really good for me. I like to have lowend on tap when I need it, torque gets you out of trouble and can make a motor easier to run. That's just IMO.

The 02 is different from the 03-04. They have different part #s and I think the timing is different. The 05 CRF is the 06 HRC for the trx. It is different from the 04-05 HRC. The older HRC is a top end cam were the 06HRC is an aggressive all around cam.

For what it sounds like you do you could go with a CRF 02 for good bottom and mid with a little increase in top.

CRF 05 for good all around
HCS2 for good all around

I don't think anyone has gotten the exact numbers between 05 CRF and HCS2

Rossier has done some testing...the HCII beats the 05 CRF everywhere...

I love my '02 CRF. I went with the CRF b/c it's a Honda part. I do believe that the HotCam II is the better cam, it's cheaper also!

Wouldnt the hotcam stage 1 be more comparable to the 02 CRF cam?

could you put a 03 crf cam in a 05 450r ?

Yes, but it's not the 03 you want. The 02 and 05 are better upgrades for the trx. The 02crf is a better cam than the HCS1, it gives better bottom and up power, little more of an all around cam.

The HCS2 is a great cam but I've ridden a bike very similar to mine and I didn't like the power curve; it moved it up more than I like and felt useable power in the higher revs. My crf came on stronger but fell off sooner than the HC. The HCS2 would be a good cam to use if a high comp piston will be used later, or it you run in the high rpm of each gear. I like to lug mine a little and feel the snap of the midrange. I may be changing over however to a HC with my new piston.

I'm going to be puting in a 480 kit. and I'm the high bidder on ebay for the 03 cam. How high of compression would I have to go to make a good power curve? would 11.5-1 or 12-1 make up for it?

Not that I tested one myself, but I dont believe the 03 is worth putting into the trx. Either get the 02 cam or hc.

I love to rev my 450 to the moon, so the hrc was the only way for me to go. When my warrenty is up im going to put hicomp piston in and go through all bearings and seal's. I'm also going to send my head off to have Dan from dasa do his magic. I should be in the mid 50's im hoping for rear wheel horsepower by then.

Ive got the cam on order. it should be coming with in the next week. I race xc but hell I ride full throttle most of the time anywayz, and when I do let off I'm trying to go slow so I dont think its going to hurt. I will get a 12-1 piston soon.
