drop the front sprocket a tooth or 2. for starting easier, it does it better after its broke it. turn it on, pump the throttle 3x, pull the choke, and press the button. works in a couple seconds every time for me. also make sure your battery is fully charged.

Yeah, I agree with the sprocket thing. And what's the temperature where you live. I've been hearing some problems with 450rs staring in the cold.

My '05 was hard to start at first, it got easier after it got broke in real good. I can sit on it and kick it over.

the starting problem has been discussed many many times. but here goes:

make sure headlight is turned off.
pump throttle 3 times (BEFORE KICKING!!!!!)
pull choke.
kick.

you will get used to starting it in no time. it takes time to get the hang of it. In my first two races on my R I was the last off the line. now I get it fired in no time. I've takin the holeshot almost every time. as for gearing you can drop a tooth on your front sprocket but you will lose your top speed. your best bet will be just get the hang of it, after awhile you will like it more than gearing on lets say a 400ex. I do, and 75% of my ridding is in the woods.
