I have a 2000 Honda 400EX that blows blue smoke but hardly uses oil and I have heard the 400EX is known for burning oil regardless of the wear. Whether this is true I do not know, but my bike has much power and does not suffer any mechanical defects other than the smoke, none the less I will replace the rings & valve seals, hone the cylinder, and maybe put a 416 kit on it. If you know what a 416 kit sells for please let me know. I want an honest number from you guys whether your Honda 400ex smokes, regardless of year. Please complete the poll.

Very possible. When is it smoking?? at startup, under power, idling, all the time, when shifting gears??

If it's a 2000 and never been rebuilt then it's time for an overbore, valveseals, piston, etc,.

It smokes mainly at higher RPMs more so in gear under load. I'm convinced its rings. Still has much power. I also agree the jetting is probably too rich, because the plug is black as night with dry carbon all over it. I am going to tear it down after I do a compression test... Also the oil was a little overfilled I think.

when i'm in neutral and press the throttle a decent amount, a tiny bit of blue smoke comes out after I let off the gas. I'm doin my 416 in a few weeks tho so i'm not worried...

Sounds like your valve seals. What year? Somehow alot of them smoke. Maybe poor piston ring quality?

aint that a beach.... i wouldn't be impressed of my 04 done that! Oh well. It's the nature of these engines. This is my first fourstroke that has smoked! Ever! (Visibly). I plan to ride it for a while and sell it when it's fixed and purchase a YFZ. I may keep it, I am not sure.

Lucky you guys. Some are more fortunate than others. Too bad your bike smokes banshee, I would be some pissed. Their notorious for valve seals. I think all I will do is put a Wiseco performance piston in, hone the cylinder and put new valve seals in and go from there. If it still smokes... out the door she goes. Like I said before, this is my first smoking fourstroke. I'm tearing it down this Wednesday...

I have a 99 and it smoked a little even after rebuilding it (440 big valve full race port stg 2 cam) I think ex motors get verry hot and the cylinder gets out of roun abit. try changing your oil i use kendal 20-50 and lucas oil and mix the two oiles 50-50. this will handle the heet mutch better and the smoke

I have done that, I think the ring's are at the end of there rope on this bike. I have a hard time understanding why these specific motor's smoke like they do. A fourstroke is NOT supposed to smoke. Must be a major design flaw.

took my engine apart today, getting cylinder honed and new rings. cold compression test read 120psi dry.

MIKE!
