Getting the head ported and polised in well worth it. If you alread have the cam and you are tearing it down I would do it.
I was concerned about running race gas when I did mine. So I put in the 10.5:1 piston in. I do run race gas when I am racing and it makes a real difference. Even a mixture of 50/50 race gas and 93 octane makes a differnce, that is what I have been doing for my other riding.
As far as the cost,my 440 kit cost $265 plus $85 to have the sleeve installed and $120 for porting and polishing. Which comes to a grand total of $470, which would fit in you $500 budget. :D

not to positive but if you get the 11.5 to 1 and use a 400ex head gasket it would actually be 11.3 to on so i don't know i you run the xr gasket to keep it the same but if you do run the 400ex one you might wanna get 11.8to one or so..

416 is the way to go.....JE 10-8 to1 is high as you can go on pump gas thats what i got and if you want to run race gas you can.......porting and polishing i heard are great if you buy the head pipe too! ......Terry Marcum sells the 416 kit.....if you already have the xr 400 cam all it will cost you is like 155........some where in that area the best thing to do is email terry....marcumsatvs@hotmail.com.......his website seems tobe acting up some but i know him personally and i am totally impressed with my 416 havent fully broke it in but wow so far its awesome......all they do is bore it 80 over ......no sleeve or nothing no valve work.....i had my valve seals replaced with new ones and also had vortex baskett and barnett clutches installed....big power difference.good luck.....and marcums is our sponsor here at exriders.com so i think you get some type of discount too.....email him he will get back with by tomorrow morning ......

I am wondering if the wb all around cam is a good choice to do but is it better than the xr

The XR400 s 120 give or take a few. I did it and it rocks (see post xr400 cam update).
