So i bought my mom a wireless Linksys router for Christmas, only to just find out, her laptop is not WiFi compatible! The router has 4 ports on the back, should I just buy her a cable to hook up a hard line, or arent there like usb wireless adapters I can buy???

(I want to keep the wireless one so I can use it with my PSP! :p )

Are these adapters universal? Will any brand adapter work with my Linksys Router?

Thats a good wireless router, I have the same one. My two desktops are plugged into it by cable (I ran 1 cable through the attic for the bedroom computer) and I go all over the house with my laptop. Get you a pc wifi card to plug in. Heres the link to what it looks like. Im surprised your moms laptop does not have a built in wifi. most laptops 3 years or newer have it built in. My new one does, my older one, a Dell Pentium-3 did not. There may be a switch to turn on your moms wireless if her laptop has it.

When I was shopping for mine... Seemed like you had to spend over 900$ to get intergrated wireless for some reason  ....

i have a USB card that will work as a wifi card and the software for it. cost me $60 new but will let it go for $22 shipped. I barely used it.

that is a great choice for that router. Just for reference you do not have to stick with one brand over the other just to match the brand of the switch. they all run on the same radio frequency 802.11. in my experiences linksys makes one of the best wireless sets on the market today.

Im surprised how many wireless networks there are when cruising around. Lot of them unsecured too. Oh well, i dont think its going to hurt anything to do a little surfing on someones wireless network.

Yep - my neighbor is one of them. I just got a new laptop with wireless....I was very close to getting a new router, but when I search for networks, I found a connection.

But since they have a wireless router, cant you access their personal files on their desktop computer?

Only if they have thier files setup for sharing on the network.

Hopefully they aren't stupid enough to share files on a wireless network lol.

Wireless networks are awesome, im actually on a laptop with WiFi using that same exact router as we speak. Its been great so far. We have had it for about 6 months or so and no problems yet. It is cool going around places and finding wifi. Having the internet practically anywhere is awesome. They also had cards you can get through cell phone providers and you can get internet through them anywhere that you have service on a cell phone, which is prety cool.

What about sharing printers? How is that going to work with her notebook? Easy?

yup, if the printer is hooked to another PC just go into the Printers and Faxes window and right click, and then choose to share the printer.

Then go to her Laptop and add a new printer, choose network printer, and browse for the one that is shared on the applicable PC.

Of course that PC needs to be on.
