View Full Version : Do I need to Remove my Motor from the frame to do a top end job?

I am going to start my tear down tomorow and I was wondering if I need to take the motor out of the frame.

Also What is the external oil pipe? My owners manual says to remove to remove the cam chain and stuff. This is the clutch cover, right?

No the motor will not have to be removed.

It does not need to be removed, but I always found it easy to do outside of the frame, so once you get it in all you have to do it adjust and fire her up. To each his own. Good luck :)

its already been ripped apart for a month. Just got my top end back today all nice a bored and its going to be put back together on monday. Oh and i did decide to take it out of the frame

good luck getting it back in, it can be a real pain. i beleive going in head first from the left is the easiest way

yeah, hopefully i can get it back together sometime this week. And then i gotta get it all nice and broke in for a Feb 5 race.

Where can i get a piston ring instalation tool. I never used one on my 90 and my Wiseco says that you need to use one.

you can get a ring compressor at NAPA or auto zone, just make sure it will adjust small enuff for your pistion. try with out first, chances are you wont even need it

Just get your dad or friend to help, one person hold the rings while the other slides the jug on. It's a little tricky but you can do it.

I've found a ring compressor tool is almost impossible to use in the tight space.

I usually just use my fingers and install the pistin into the sleeve. then carefully slide it onto the studs, and install the pin and retainers. But, it can be tricky to do this way.

If you want to istall the piston onto the rod first, a large 3-4" hose clamp works great to compress the rings. Then you just back it all the way out and pull it off.

I found it easier to slide the piston in the jug then connect it to the rod.
