View Full Version : where is a good place to live?

so here's the deal... i'm in the navy... i hate it - but thats another can of worms. i've been on submarines the past 3 years and i'm an "outdoors" type of guy. anyway
im getting out spring-time on a medical discharge with honorable service. the medical discharge is depression related. now that might sound crazy, but i couldnt even begin to explain. basically theyve said "you are depressed because of your life style in the navy, the navy is downsizing, we arent putting any more money into you, heres your chance to get out."
im 21 years old, single. my mom and dad and all of my family live in pennsylvania (about 4 hours away from connecticut, where im stationed now). i go back often... but i dont want to have to deal with the "why are you out of the navy?" questions. its a small town, i have a HUGE family, everyone knows me. i cant go anywhere without someone askng me "so how do u like the navy? where are stationed? how much longer do you have in? do u like it? what do u do? where have you been?" and i HATE this. i want to move back, but i dont think i will. i'm thinking possibly somewhere else. im a navy nuke machinist mate (i work on mechanical systems of a nuclear power plant - but i dont like it - its boring). i do not want to do this at a powerplant, even though the money is good. money isnt everything. i love outdoors work, whenever im home, i always help friends out on their farm or chop wood, or something like that. im considering just doing that. working on a farm somewhere. its very self-satisfying for me. my criteria for where to move... 1.small town; 2.good area for riding quads (mx); 3. inexpensive living; 4.doesnt get TOO cold. thats all i can think of right now actually. i have an '02 silverado z71, a '55 chevy street rod, and a 400ex. everythings paid off... so i think itll be somewhat easy starting off somewhere fresh. i dont ever want to get married, so im not worried about supporting a family - ever.

anyone have any suggestions

thanks,
tim

i like it here in michigan but we do get a lot of snow and have a crapp economy. We have a ton of trails, we have silver lake sand dunes, i believe living more north michigan it gets cheaper. I think anywhere in the midwest would be nice to live besides the cold.

south alabama baby........ good mx tracks around here (a very good one right here in good ol atmore), and theres also 5 or 6 very good tracks in the florida panhandle so u'd be close to them... there are alot of people with hotrods and old chevelles and camaro's and what not... good people, doesnt get to cold, but it has its days(lowest ive seen it get is 15, but thats like once every 5 years), and living around here doesnt cost to much.....

just a suggestion

It's probably too cold, but I live in central WI and love it. There's like 4 big trail systems w/in 2 hours of it:
1) Perkinstown trails (Chequamegon Nat'l Forest) 15 miles.
2) Camp 8 trails (15 miles north)
3) Clark County Traiils (45 miles)
4) Jackson County Trails (90 miles)

Also, ATV's are allowed on the snowmobile trails in the winter, which is a blast. Before those open though, lots of ppl run the river, which is also fun. Ice racing is popular in the winter, and as far as summer mx racing, it's in the middle of everywhere. 3-4 hours away from the furthest tracks (Lake Mills and in the U.P.)

It's not a big town, and there's plenty of "outdoor" work like you want. I know you said you don't like the cold, but with all the riding I can do, it kinda grew on me. I find myself looking forward to winter to pound the river and trails...

Georgia, there is no better place than you can go to and my town fits your description
Eastman, Georgia

it is a small town but not like a depressing town where there is nothing for miles it keeps me satisfied

There is actually a mx track that my friends uncle ownsabout 30 minutes away from my house, and there is one that has occasional rides that is about 15 miles from me, and about an hour and a half from me is the best track in GNC Echiconee, and a little further is Aonia Pass that has a mx track and also is where the GNCC is held in GA, there are alot more places in Georgia but those are just a few

the coldest it gets is around 40 degrees and thats about Feb. and we hardly get any snow we might get around a inch if we are lucky and that doesn't happen alot

there is plenty of country out here to choose from there is a real small town where we have some land that is called plainfield and it is nothing but country ohh yeah the only thing that is there is 2 drink machines and one of them works and two rundown stores and two churches

if you want to know anything else I will tell you it is a real nice place if you just want to live out in the country and be alone

there's one thing I forgot to mention if you live out in Plainfield you will hear fourwheelers Saturday which is always good there is a but load of people that have quads down here

I'd suggest Ontario Canada ... but I know that's out of the picture for you . Benefits though .... some decent tracks in Southern Ontario . Largest ATV trail system out there right now .... you can litterally ride from Ontario right out to the east coast ( New Brunswick) ... but we get cold temps . I like it though cuz I get to actually see the 4 seasons .

I really liked the scenery of the Northern part of New York state when I was last down there . Seems very relaxing . Nice country . Get the 4 seasons like we got up here . Nice MX tracks . Was told they really clamped down on trail usage though .

Go home first, find a job somewhere else, then move. If you don't line something else up first, you're gonna be hosed.

Speaking from experience. I was a Nuke MM (ELT) on the Nimitz for 6 years. (and yes, I know how depressing it could get out there)

When you get out, the jobs aren't just out there waiting for you... All my friends from the ship got out around a year or so after I did and EVERY ONE OF THEM went back to college because they weren't satisfied with the job offers.

Future employers are going to want to know why you got out of the Navy early....be prepared to tell them, and tell them the truth...they'll respect that more than someone making up a lame reason.

Your not gonna beat the Northeast. People drive thousands of miles to drive through the northeast but the winters are cold but I would rather live with that than have to re-build my house every year:D

i get to keep my GI Bill and VA benefits.. but i have NO desire to go to college. i have developed some hardcore A.D.D. . I go bananas during training every week because i cant sit there and listen to a bunch of BS. im sure you know how that goes (chad400ex). and i know in college im gonna sit there and be forced to learn sh*t i dont need. i'm a quick learner though and a hard charger. it bit me in the @$$ though. i could go on forever about that, but i won't. putting someone like me with a whole lot of energy and that constantly has to be doing something productive as a nuke on subs is a BAD combination.

Thats true but alot of things are cheap back in my old town in kansas which was 40 miles away from Hutchinson Kansas. houses were so cheap and it was legal to ride 4 wheelers on the road which was good but there are alot of downsides to it because Meth is a big problem here. i have 2 neighbors that are meth addicts and they pass out in there backyard all the time. we all aroun have a big problem with drugs.

IMO, there is no better place to live than the Pacific Northwest. From old growth rainforests, huge mountains, high deserts and beautiful coastlines. If your truely an outdoors person than you would love it here. Ive seen this great country from coast to coast, and would not choose to live anywhere else than the PNW.
Although, the appalachin mountains in the fall are a sight one should not miss;)

dont rule out Texas...we have tons of racing here and lots of open land... we got big cities and small towns... and mild winters... its got a little bit of everything really. Closer to the dallas area u got the TQRA (mx), close to the Houston area u have the STQRA (mx), and the ATVCCS (xc) goes all around TX sort of. Tons of riding and racing.

Ever been to Oregon? There's dunes, mountains, and desert. The Oregon Coast has a very mild climate with great summer weather. There is farm land all over. Also, there is a ton of construction around the state if that is something that seems of interest to you for a job. You like to hunt? Great hunting around the entire state. Blacktail, mule deer and some whitetail bucks. There is also great elk hunting. There is some motocross tracks around. But you'd be just one state above good ol' California which has plenty. Did I mention that there is only ONE large city in Oregon? Good Luck.

I would have to say Oregon Also I read somewhere recently that it's in the top ten places to live good economy. Plus have you seen the dunes!!!! go to the dune tales section and look at the dune riding pic's. there is one on there that is unbelievable. I live in Utah and the view is nice but that's it the Mormons run the state some counties don't allow alcohol on Sunday's there is nothing open on Sundays but Albertsons and Smiths, the state taxes are high these families don't believe in birth control so they " have as many kids as god gives us " and mooch off the state cause they can't afford all of them there was a family on my block that had 12 kids!!! they issue a 25% tax on pornography bought out of state, Ebay won't let you look at certain adult things due to the state laws here. The cost of living is high and the pay sucks a big one!! unless you are in a very specialized field. People here are very judgemental and afraid of all outsiders I am moving as soon as my husband gets another job offer maybe back to Vegas :D or possibly Sacramento who knows anything but Utah, the snowboarding rocks though. whoa must of had to vent sorry. I HATE UTAH

I tend to agree with the Pacific Northwest. Its beautiful out there.
The northeast is real nice too, but its cold and crowded. Ive
also always liked Tennessee and North Georgia.
I suggest looking around on the net and making some road trips.

SR doesnt have any good riding anymore now that they flattened the pits

The pits was literally the best place on earth to ride

At least 50 ppl around there bought quads just so they could ride there

But all the good riding around here is at my place now weve got stripmines that go on for miles there is always something to do.

Tennessee , alot of outdoors, not to crowded, u don't have to worry bout how u talk, cuz everyone it really plain and simple, just have to watch where u decide to go, west tn is bout 65% black and some cities have a big crime ratio, middle tn, ur moving up in cities, and away from cities, more population, bout 50% black and crime is just as bad,, East tn, beautifull, spreadout, and is awesome when it snows, 10% black, and not near as much crime except in afew cities, u just about have to hunt for a black person, only thing bout east is there r afew bears (lol) u might wake up one day look out the window and find smokey in ur frontyard

Oregon......hands down. From forests to desert to coastal dunes, Oregon has it all. And like stated previously in this thread, Portland is the only major city. Plenty of small towns in this state. An airline ticket is the only thing between you and your folks so living across the country isn't a huge problem.
