I thinking about undertaking a project here and am trying to gather some information.

What I need to know is if there is any quad that has a rear hand brake that mounts on the left side of the handle bars. The master cylinder must not be on the lever like a normal front brake master cylinder, but it should be like most regular rear brake master cylinders.

Does a quad like this exist?

Yea everything i've seen that have the rear handbrake use drum brakes which will not work in my case since they do not have a master cylinder.

Maybe some utility quads? Anyone know of anything?

I can't help with your question directly.....

You may have to fabricate something. Maybe use a rear master cylinder and mount it on one of the frame tubes. Then run a cable from the lever to the cylinder and a hydraulic line to the caliper.

Here's basically what I want to do. Have a thumbrake to operate the rear brake. On this site you can buy a kit that does this but it iw very expensive. Where as I can but the master cylinder arealdy made fabbed up for like $60 then try to rig somethign up by using a regular lever.

Is your idea to use the junction valve from that site, use regular lever and flip it around to use as a thumb brake lever?

I suppose it could work with some fabbing......

I've been in contact with that company and their willing to work with me, but as of right now they think I want to use there whole kit when in reality I hopefully will only need the valve

What kind of effect would hooking a regular front brake with master cylinder hooked up to that vavle master cylinder work. Would it work?

This is a bit over my head, just throwing out some ideas and thoughts........;)

Would the reservoir be in the way? It may be kind of bulky depending on what you're doing with it.

Does the junction valve replace the master cylinder? If so it may be more reliable and safer than welding a stock unit and you may not need the reservoir on the lever.

Yea I think the vavle replaces the stock master cylinder. I'm pretty sure it's pretty much like the one above. What kind of effect would having two master cylinder inline like that have since i'd be using a front brake with a master cylinder hooked up to the vavle master cylinder.

I think I can deal with the bulkyness of the front brake lever/ master cylinder if I have to.

My main probly is I'm at school in my apartment and I really need to take a good look at my quad which is in my garage at home to see what would and won't work/fit.

I was looking for something similar to the set up on the 250ex where it has a handbrake and footbrake. The only problem is the brakes on the 250ex are drum.

FYI:
That has 2 lines coming off of the foot pedal. His foot pedal does both the front and rear brakes. Just the opposite of what you want.

what about using a Polaris Master Cylinder that controls both front and rear with one lever?

A couple companies make a split brake kit for polaris quads that uses a hand lever on the left for the rear brakes. I believe it has a master cylinder on the left side lever. It might work for you. You could check www.rittercycle.com or www.aaenperformance.com

I'm not poitive which one sells the brake kit. HotSeat may sell them also.

No in this custum setup it lets you use the foot brake or the thumbrake which both operate the rear brake

I race with one leg. I had cancer and lost my right leg. I wasn't going to be able to use the foot brake while racing. On my 400ex, I went with a Polaris setup. I put it where the front brake lever was. With this setup, you can tie both front and back brakes together. It works out really well, and depending on which way you were rolling, it would lock up the tires that you would use regularly. I don't have any pictures, but if you went to a dealer, they should know what you are talking about.

I am going to be getting a 450r with a Rekluse in it. They market a dual brake kit for the left side of the handlebars, with a clutch override, which I bought for racing. This gets rid of the original clutch lever and replaces it with a brake lever for the rear brake. There is also a two finger clutch lever to have if you still want to use the clutch.

Here is a link to the dual brake kit from Rekluse:

Pretty much all of the full size polaris quads use a single lever brake setup. I know the trailblazer and scramblers do.

I am thinking the one I had on my 400ex, was for a Sportsman 6x6.
