i have a 99 400ex i could trade for a restored 86 lt250r with DG front and rear bumper full DG exhaust douglas red label polished rear wheels and douglas wheels, new top end brand new factory wiring harness coil and cdi box. It was pulled apart and everything was pulled apart and repainted. Would this be a good trade? i ride mainly trails and want somthing reliable.. i had a rm125 so i know about 2 strokes...any suggestions?

the lt250r is a nice bike but if your doing technical stuff and trails stick w/ the 400ex. However, the 250 is faster so u might wanna think about that.

between those 2 quads, you are definitly riding the most reliable one right now......assuming your 400ex is in good shape. The lt250r may have just been restored, but if you ever have to find parts for it..GOOD LUCK. Where as the 400ex as tons of parts available from just about anywhere. 400EX :macho

I've had my LT250R for about 8 years now. Finding parts, either OEM or aftermarket is not a problem. ;)

keep the 400 ex unless he will throw in some money. the 84 and 85 were only 5 speed not 6 and are not powervavled. your 400ex is worth more than a quadracer. (most of the time).
just my 2 cents

I have both, an 86LT and an 05EX. The LT is quick, but the 400 will out handle and ride it, 10:1. There is absolutely no comparison on the overal ride performance. The 400 has tons of torque which makes it a blast to ride. The LT's would be best used with paddles on sand. Keep the 400ex.

First year of the LT250R was 1985...

From years 1987-92 they were power-valved. The 87-92 had a six-speed tranny, as you previously noted. As far as the 400EX being worth more than an LT... Just barely. An LT in good condition can go from $1500-3000. I see 400EX going for about the same. All in what you want.

Sorry, the 400EX will not necessarily out-handle an LT. I've been riding for almost 20 years... My LT for about 8 of those years. I've ridden against 400EX's. They are a good handling quad. So is the LT. ;) I've ridden with a friend who had a 400Ex, and is a good rider. I remember ripping through the woods, some tight turns. Waiting for him to show up. Him showing up with dirt all over his riding gear... He rolled it on a turn... :D Admitttedly I have some aftermarket stuff on my LT... However, even stock it handled well and had good power. I also admit the 400 is probably more trail-friendly... and more maintenance free being a 4-stroke. :)

if you get off an EX and jump on an LT you will notice a big difference in handling. The EX has a light, agile, almost power steering feel in comparison to the 20 year old LT technology. I'm not saying you can't make the LT better with some mods. It's all in the front end geometry and components. The LT was probably designed and drawn on paper back in the mid 80's. The EX has the PC and a CAD program to thank. I still enjoy riding the LT when I want the burst of 2-stroke power.

Light? Lets see... Stock, the LT weighs in at about 325 pounds. Stock the 400 weighs in about 390 pounds? And yes, they did have computers back in the eighties to do design work... although the computers were much bigger! :D As with anything, there are pros and cons... all in what you want. ;)

I wasn't talking about actual weight, but how much lighter the control feels. Dude I have both bikes and I like both, so this isn't a knock on the LT just simple facts. In the mid 80's what did we have for PC's ? a commador 64? I'm faily sure it wasn't running a CAD program. Just making a point about technology being more advanced. Look at what theyv'e done with 4-stroke (450r's ect)

Yeah, they did have CAD programs waaaay back then...

Light controls? I always thought 330 pound felt much lighter, whether in handling, or pushing it off me... :p

Dude, I have an LT and Raptor. Also ridden the 400 EX, which is a nice quad. Trust me, I am NOT a FNG when it comes to riding. Yes, technology has come a long way. Just commenting on your comparisons to the LT and 400 EX. Neither of which are in the same arena as latest technology quads. ;)

In your post in the other thread... ripping on Yamahas saying how they suck... Yeah, they don't make anything good... That Honda YFZ 450 is the greatest... Honda R1 too... And Yamaha utility quads are such chit... Off to play my organ now... :p

btw... welcome to the site. :blah:

what is so technologically advanced about the 400ex they can't even keep up with honda's quad built in the 80's the 250r

To go from a 400EX to a Quadracer would be a huge step back. I had an 86 QR and there is no, zip, zero, zilch chance I would go back to it. The layout of it is terrible compared to my 400EX. The handling is so sub par it's ridiculous. I do not miss it one bit. Only my 3 year old cried when I sold it.

Sure the EX is a little less powerful and I crave more power sometimes but to be honest, it's so much easier to ride and more fun that the lack of power isn't noticed.

Before you decide, at the very least, ride the Quadracer for more than a few minutes. Ride it in the same areas you do your EX. You will appreciate your EX.

Just a little FYI, I'm a Suzuki fan. Since I was a kid, they've been my favorite, still are. I'm honest enough to tell you my straight up opinion even though it's not favorable to my favorite mfg. Riding should be fun, it's is on my EX, not a job, like it was on my Quadracer.

Where abouts in Texas are you and your 87 250R? Northeast TX? Just curious.

im in waco right now, but i live in northeast texas close to texarkana when im not at school, i am about to get the frame powdercoated, there is a small crack in my swingarm as well, so i am going to get a professional welder to fix that for me then powdercoat the frame and swingarm blue, let me know if you want it, b/c if you do i will put everything back together, i have been messing with racing quads for a while so i wont have a problem with putting back together in less than a day, the right way

No, I'm not really interested in buying it, sorry. I was just curious more than anything. I do trek down near Waco though a couple of times a year.
