3 months ago I rebuillt my 2000 400ex and now i can hear a ticking inthe top end. It's not a continous rythum. And i'm pretty sure it's not my valves. And my oil level is fine, could it be a low coolant level?

there is no coolant in a 400EX, what did you do during your rebuild?

Probabaly just need to readjust your lifters back to spec.

It may note be "continious" but it's probably more noticable at certian times due to expansion, engine speed, etc..

I'd pull the valve cover off and make sure everyhting is tight. Your cam sprocket bolts could even back out some. You did use blue lock-tite on them right?.

did your rebuild include a new timing chain? did a rebuild on a 99 and had the same problem. mine was stretched. a new one cured the tick.

that last guy was right if you didnt change the chain & especially if its original its probably toast an 02 crf450 chain will fit & work fine its a link thicker than your stock chain much stronger & cheaper thats what Im using then make your rocker adjustment to be sure ,When my motor expired & was smoking like chernobil with baffed rings I heard every tick I could imagine ,my rockers looked great though needed adjustment but Ill bet the timing chain slappin around was the biggest tick I was hearing.
