Alright, I've owned my fair share of wheelers. 250x's,350x's,250r's you name it and i have never EVER had a major problem starting them in the winter in 10 f temps. This new 05 450r of mine took 50+ kicks to get started tonight.. Thats rediculous.

Do any of you have any tips on getting these started during the cold months? Is there a trick to it?

I'm sure this is old news to you guys but i sure would appreciate some help on this one. I'm really upset about it.

Forgot, I always keep it in a insulated garage so the actual temp of the wheeler tonite in its hard start condition is probably closer to 25 degrees f..

get heater and put it next to the bike and it will start .they are not
easy to start in the winter.

Ive never had a problem starting the one I usually ride and race once in a while. Turn the choke on kick it once or twice and it fires right up.

i pump the throttle 2 or 3 times then turn the choke on and mine fires up 1st kick.

Me too, but I always use my hot-start too. I use my hot-start EVERYTIME and EVERTIME it starts on the first kick! I think alot of the problems people are having is because they're jetting is off.

I didnt start mine for about three months. Went out last night, pulled the choke started on the third kick. Its about 9 degrees here too. Maybe mess around with your jetting see if it gets easier.

Try pumping the throttle like 3 to 5 times with the choke on then kick it over. I do this and it takes me no more then 4 good kicks to get mine fired up. I just started mine for the first time in like 3 weeks after I tore it down and it was bout 20 degrees and it took about 4 kicks to get it going.

like the others said..........pump throttle 3 times (BEFORE KICKING)......pull choke........make sure headlight is turned off (when on, it robs spark).......kick away.

Mine starts up first kick? Pump the throttle a couple times then turn the choke on and kick it

Mine starts right up after maybe 3 kicks. Do not pump the throttle put the choke on and give it a couple of kicks. If I pump the throttle on mine I will be kicking it for a long time before it will start. Is your quad all stock?

I've got 9 degrees f here tonight. Just went out in the garage and turned the headlight off, pumped the throttle 4 times, turned the choke on and she fired FIRST kick and ran great!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!! I'm happy now.

Also I got to thinking, when I had trouble with it last night I had not ran the machine in a month so it is possible that some of the fuel evaporated out of the carb bowl???and made life hell for me

Either way, she is good to go now!! Thanks

I dont have a headlight in my quad, and my jetting is pretty good as far as I can tell (haven't had a chance to do any testing yet with it) Im running a slip-on, uni with no lid, I have 175 main, 50 pilot, and the clip is 4th notch down, and I pump the throttle 3 times, then kick with no prevail! Its a PITA to start in the cold!! Im thinking jetting might play a small role in this, but it runs great when I can get it going. I'm also going to try changing the plug in it too, to see if that helps. Any other ideas. Some say use the hotstart others dont!?!?

I was told today that MY carb probably has an accelerator pump!?? If thats the case then I guess the pumping the throttle would have some merit!! I'm still on the bench about turning the headlight off but it makes sense that the plug would get more power if the headlight wasn't robbing any from the system when kicking it over.

I have had mainy sport machines also. I know from experiance that if you let any sport high compression machine sit for awhile you always have to drain the carb bowl and let fresh fuel from the tank in the bowl. the aluminum has a reaction with gas and the octane is very poor and a high compression engine does not want to fire under these conditions. just my 2 cents from experiance.

I was told to NEVER pump the throttle because you could crack the case.Check your valves too.

don't pump the throttle when you are kicking it. do it before

pump it 4 times push the hot start and kick once and fires right up. if i don't use the hot start i could kick 10 times, but every engine is different

Yes, pump the throttle. the 450r has a accelerator pump.

Just dont do it when your kicking. ONLY do this before you kick, or you will crack the case.
