I just bought the regular edelbrock carb (34mm x 38mm ovel bore carb) from my friend and I was wondering what needle I should be using in a 400ex?

I have a 440 kit, hot cam, Full R-4 exhaust, porting, rev box, and a K&N. I tried it with a 17-E but it was pouring out black smoke. My friends was just bored out a size over and it ran great, should I need a bigger jet since I have the 440 kit?

I was running a 165 in my stock carb when I heard most people were running 170 or 175, but mine wasn't running lean.

Edelbrock said that I should be using a 19-E but mine was putting out black smoke with a 17-E.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I am going to try a 15-E tonight and see what happens. Thanks!

I put the 17-E in and started it at 12 click from rich, but it was running very rich, so I had put lower the needle some more. I have it at like 14 or 15 click from full rich.

I was suprised that with the 440 kit and with everything else done, I didn't need a 19 like a was told from edelbrock.
