Hello All,

I just got a 400EX. I have never had a chain driven quad before. I took it to the coast etc. recently. Curious, how do I clean the chain? there is sand etc. on it that is stuck in the grease etc. What works best to clean it? Do they make a cleaner that can be sprayed on it? The concensus of the group looks like Maxima Chain Wax is the popular choice once the chain is clean.

Thanks,

Chris Underwood

OIk man i will be nice and tell u the secred, take ur chain off and soak it in some gasoline and it will take the sand off and all the oil that may be old or new,Or take a wire handle brush and srape the chain with it...What ever way you do make sure u lube the chain afterwords

DO NOT USE GASOLINE!!!! On O ring chains the gas will eat the rubber o rings. use Keroscene (spelled wrong i think).

The best and simplest method is to use Kerosene and a nylon scrub brush. No need to remove the chain either. Simply put the rear end up on a block and lightly scrub the chain. Allow to dry before reapplying chain wax or lube. Kerosene will not harm the o rings and neither will the nylon scrub brush. Do not use gasoline or a wire brush.

I got a chain scrubber last christmas (Rocky Mountain Sells em).
Works like a champ.
Fill with cleaning solution, clamp on chain, and spin wheels. 3 Minutes later, Chain looks brand new.

I put 100% mineral spirits in a spray bottle, spray the chain generously, let it set a minute or two, then I go over it with a soft nylon brush, then spray it again, ride it for five minutes, then sick the PJ1 on it. It keeps it looking like new.

The two things I would not expose my chain to are gasoline, and a wire brush.

wonr mineral spirits take off paint on the quad? I have so much of it im gunna try it. Usually i justed whiped the chain with a paper towel and all the gunk would come off.

Mineral spirits will not hurt anything on your quad

could i spray mineral spirits on and scrub with a toothbrush? I dont feel like messing up my chain with something to abrasive but a toothbrush should be good right?

Thanks

Why would you even suggest something so stupid? You have got to know that that is wrong. Why would you want him to ruin his chain?

I soak mine with simple green, let it sit for a few min then spray it off. Doesn't get it spotless but you are gunna oil it afterwards anyways.

WD-40 is basically Kerosene in a spray can. WD-40 should do the trick.
