In the bend on the header pipe the pipe is burnt purple to a good degree. Im not sure how ot actually tell if the quad is running lean or not?
When i first start it it smokes black smoke for 10 seconds and clears right up, idels fine and starts good....
how do you know?

its a lean condition.....mine is the same way...I didn't worry too much about cause it will just sit all winter....so in the spring I will rejet with the pipe, cam and no airbox lid.....the whole header should be a brown color if tuned right.....everyone of these 06's is lean from the factory......

Your pipe can turn colors because of the heat, but that also could be jetting. Does it bog or anything?

Yep with the FCR carb and the jetting not right is got a heck of a flat spot right off of idle....they need tuned up from the factory.....man you would think honda would tune them beeter out of the box...at least a little closer than what they are

My header pipe is a purple color too but I have had no problems and my jetting is right on. At night when you ride sometimes they have a glow to them because the metal is thin.

Ever heard the phrase, "Glows like a hot exhaust pipe"?

Think about the temps that are coming out of the engine. The heat will discolor the metal, especially where the header connects to the engine.

My YFZ will get half the header glowing if i ride it hard. You can only see it at night though, but It runs good .

Also, if you switch to an after market pipe, the thickness of the pipe will be thinner most likely, so it will discolor even more, unless you get a ceramic coat or something similiar.

the black smoke is just fuel. dont worry about it. how long does it take you start it. or how much throttle do you give it before it starts? Its just fuel.check the plug before you go things just because of a head pipe
