I just ordered a hot cam stage 1 and wonder how many horse that it is good for in a stock motor? are they hard to break in? and last will it make the valve train loud after the breakin and final valve adjustment.(after break in) I also plan on an exhaust soon looking at a dr.D ..

i hav a stage 1 and i definetly noticed more power. its mostly mid range but you do gain both bottom and top end as well. i hav stock exhaut at the moment as well. as for break in- 1 full tank of gas riding at half throttle. your NOT supposed to let it idle at first start up. it explains all this in the instructions that come with the cam. and yes it is a bit louder. there is a slight tic even after valve adjustments.

Stage 1 is known for the tick, and it will be louder than stock, but dont worry about it. Also Im pretty sure the instructions I got with my hotcam for break in, said to run it at varying RPMS for 40 minutes. You can definitely go below half throttle. Make sure to put a lot of assembly lube on the cam lobes and in the journals.

I noticed a differnce but alone its not a big improvement. Its a combination of parts that makes up the total package. you need to get full exhuast, jet kit, filter, cam, etc to get the full potental out of adding a cam

i was wondering with my full exsaust jet kit and filter what cam i should get. i am putting a 14 tooth front sprocket. People tell me a stage 1 is like a stock cam and peole tell me a stage 2 is for bigger bores im lost

Stage 1 is nothing like stock at all. It really all comes down to how your going to use your machine. Personally I really wouldn't bother with a stage 3 unless your running at least a 416 or something like 12:1 compression or higher on the smaller bores. The stage 2 is probably the best of both worlds of the stage 1 and stage 3.

it all depends on your bike, mods, and climate you ride in I didnt change my main jet at all, jus tthe clip on the needle. Jetting is strickly a per bike deal, there are too many variables to say exactly what your jetting should be

THe only differance in stage 1 and stage 2 is the valve lift and duration right? I think its the stage one has a longer duration but less lift and the stage 2 has less duration and more lift.I have a stage one hot cam and love it for low-mid power the stage 2 is for more drag riding mid-mostly high end. And What causes the ticking?

Not sure about the ticking. Could be from the looser valve clearence specs called for by Hotcams.

This is what Hotcams claims the difference is, stock vs. stg 1:

I did the stage 1 cam with a high compression wiseco piston, a sparks flywheel key, and a big gun quiet race full system... its a completely different bike, smoother throttle, stronger power from bottom to top... i would recommend the piston/cam at the same time

how can u break in a cam and a piston at the same time? because for a cam, you cant let the rpms drop below 3,000 for 40 minutes of riding

when i broke in my cam/piston, i just rode it pretty normal, cycling through the rpms and never going full throttle on it... hotcams just recommends you dont over-rev, go wide open, or idle for the first tank of gas... i put it in a year ago and have had no problems whatsoever so far, so i think it worked for me
