I have a 400ex and am planning on having GT Thunder totally redo the front R shocks. Progressive springs, making them right for the 400ex. But I'm wondering if the Elka recs would still be a better suspension to buy than having Laz do all that. Any have any ideas or comments?

All depends on how much you are looking to spend. I had my R shocks triple rated in the front and dual rated in the rear. Worked like a champ. On a 400EX I'm sure they would be night and day over stock shocks, having them revalved and resprung makes a huge diff in ride quality. Elka rec's are a decent shock for the money. But I'd do the R shock rebuilt. Let me know if you need someone to do the shock work. Guy does wonders with my shocks in GA.

I'm having Laz at GT Thunder do them. If I go with him total for front and rear it'll be about 600 dollars. And I already have the R shocks. But I could sell them for 200, get the recs and get my rear redone by him as well and spend about the same money. I'm just wondering if it'd be better to have the elka recs because they're made exactly for my bik over the R shocks. money difference is not an issue, i'm just wondering which would be the better setup.

The rec's for the front might be a better option for you then. Since the 450R shocks, although they bolt up, are not the correct geometry for a 400EX. A rear rebuild/resprung shock works excellent. Even look into a lower end set of axis shocks or used.

What did Gt Thunder say about using the 450R shocks on a 400ex? Laz would know if he can make the 450R shocks work fine on the 400ex, and he also would tell you if he thought that the Elka recs would be better. He seems pretty honest about that stuff, even if it means that he won't make any money off of you.

Yeah I tried calling laz all day today but I never got an answer. I was planning on asking what he would do. I'll try him tom. even though he's closed. I wish he'd answer because I have someone waiting for the "yes" on a brand new pair of recs for a good price. But it'll work out.

I would have Laz do the front and rear together so it would match. (Front to rear)

I just talked to Laz and he recommended me getting the Elka recs. SO it looks like I'll be ordering some in the near future!

I would still get the R shocks revalved because they have a ressivor. My friend got the elka recs and they suffer bad from shock fade, you can actually grab the shock and feel how hot the oil in them is. And there not as adjustable as the R shocks if I remember right.

Yeah, I'm planning on adding resevoirs when the funds come in. Laz said he'll do it for 300.

good choice you will be much happier in the long run. Laz really knows his stuff, don't listen to jacklegs on here over him. ever.

and just because the shock is physically hut to the thouch does not mean that the oil is over heated enough to fade, oil really doesnt start to break down until long past where you could hold your hand on it
