Is the oil cooler on the 400EX made of aluminum. If so then i could polish it and make it look better.

The oil cooler or oil tank? The Oil Cooler is like a small radiator, the oil tank is the silver thing you dump oil in

Not sure what it is made of but it has some kind of coating on it, like maybe anodizing?? I know this because I had to get mine welded and some of it peeled off. I guess what I am saying is maybe you shouldn't try to polish it. But then again what do I know....

Yea, its aluminum, but painted. Get some stripper like they use to polish sidecases and go to work. But beware, the stripper will melt rubber gloves to your fingers...

yeah i had something like that happen to me. i was using paint stripper on the oil filter cover and i didn't take the o ring off and the o ring streached out to doubble the size. however it did shrink back to the normal size. lucky. i don't use rubber gloves.
