Do you have to have an aftermarket subframe to use the AC grab bar with number plate mount?

To mount a different grabbar on the stock subframe you have to cut off the stock one. After you cut it off, then weld on some new mounts so that it can be bolted on. There is someone who sells a mount kit for the 400ex stock subframe.

not all aftermarket grab bars make you cut the subframe. I have a prm grabbar on my 400ex that mounts directly up to the stock subframe and stock grabbar. If you go with one where you need to cut the frame if you can find a used 250r subframe it will work fine with no cutting.

You can just make your own number plate mount like I did. Just buy a plain white number plate from Maier (like $10 or less from RockyMountain), remove the taillight, drill holes in the number plate and use bolts and nylock nuts to attach the plate to the stock rubber taillight mounts. Works great, cheap, and super easy! I would like to do the 250R grab bar mod, but I don't have access to a welder so this works fine IMO.

Yeah, then welded the tube on the back and welded nuts in the tube and on the out side of the tube on the front bolts.
