450r shocks will work, but need to be revalved for the 400 to work properly. Works shocks are a great inexpensive choice, work well and come from the factory how you want them set to your weight and type of riding. The elka's are better than the works but you will pay more for the elka's. i would say get the elkas if you can afford them, if not get works. last would be the 450r shocks, but if you can get some for a good deal buy them.

yes what he said except for the 450R shock thing...I trail ride and MX just about every weekend and I have the 450R shocks on my 400ex and it was the best thing that I have done so far..It makes an incredible diffrence in handling and they have an adjustable preload , soft and hard setting. I love my shocks but by all means if you have the money to spend on a GREAT suspension get the elkas...but if your on a budget or you just dont want to spend 400..to 1200 on shocks get some used 450R shocks off ebay ...you can get some pretty good deals

i have a 01 4000ex, i have been considering this exact topic for a while now. I blew the stockers out, (blew the left one valves, bent the tube, and leaks, due to the shock mount ripping off and the shock falling between the a-arm, wasnt fun ride home) anyways, do the 450r shock make that much of a difference? what is the average price you found for the 450r shocks on ebay? or would the works be a better buy?

the works would be a better buy over the R shocks if that's all you spend on suspension. If you want to save some money and spend at different times buy the R shocks and send them to GT Thunder. I'm doing that and I'll post later how they ride. I got my R shocks for 200 dollars and they're a HUGE upgrade over stock. If you plan on keeping the R shocks stock on your 400 I'd say spend alittle extra money and get the shocks built exactly for you. But if you don't want to spend that much you will be more than happy with R shocks.

would a 450R shock fit a 400EX? would 450R front shocks work with an elka rear shock? Can u mix and match front to back shock?

Thanks, Mitch

yes they will, but get elka fronts and get GT thunder rear. Fronts IMO are more important.

not for sure on just the rear. The link is around 200 and then getting it revlavled, not a ton more. Call em' up and find out for yourself.
