I would race it the way it is. And save the money for a 450.

i owned a yfz and i've own 400ex's, and trust me the yfz isn't that great. yeah its super quick revving, but for a great trail or xc bike i still think a 400ex is the best all around bike. especially for the money. i believe people get too caught up in the hype and wanting to have the newest thing...for all around handling and a controllable predictable power you still can't beat the 400. and i don't think i even have to mention reliablity and ease /cost of maintenence. and don't give me the baloney about what the pros ride. they would ride a broomstick if they were paid to. and the fact that they are that good means they could win on a broomstick also....a 400ex with a 426 kit and some minor port/polishing and medium compression. will run just fine....

i have my ex setup for xc and do the following mods:

suspension
slip-on pipe and filter
nerfbars

and those are the best and easiest mods to start you off. a set of holeshot hd's wouldnt hurt aswell.

I raced a stock 400EX last year in about 6 hairscrambles. It is plenty fast and handles great. I would recommend replacing the front shocks though, they really suck.

Hey rico, how do you like your lightened flywheel, GT thunder CDI and intake?

PS: I am running a HMF full and a K & N with a 160 main. Think I am still to rich?

This is just the type of thread that I was looking for. What are you GNCC racers doing to the front shocks? Are you getting them rebuilt or just going with aftermarket shocks? Also some info on the rear would help too.

I am attempting to get into GNCC racing on a budget with a used 400ex.

The flywheel was lightened about a month after I bought the quad in 2000. I like it and have no complaints. The GT Thunder CDI and intake along with his play porting was a VERY nice addition to the motor.

ON the main jet, I can't really say since jetting varies. The motor will tell you what it needs. Mine is running like a raped ape now that the temp has dropped. I can barely keep the front end down going thru the trails...:eek2: Might be the 30lbs of wieght I dropped too.. LOL

My motor has been reliable as it can get and is bullet proof. I recently had Heavy Duty studs installed by GT Thunder which made it even more solid.

For GNCC Racing I'd go with shocks first over any other mod.
