I have a 03 400ex and was wondering if it OK to shift without the clutch. Only up tho, like 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5. Is this OK?Because when you are going fast, and you need to shift, when you bring in the clutch you hear is rev. Does anyone do this? Is it bad?

if you let off the gas completely it shouldn't harm anything. I found that honda's shift better without the cluth than yamahas.

just ride it like a 250EX, let off the gas, shift, get back in the gas.

why would u wanna do that, that takes forever, when your trying to go really fast, dont let off the gas no matter what. When i drag race i keep it WFO the whole way, and just pull the clutch in really fast and shift quickly.
It takes practice but its much faster

Yea, but what if your clutch is stiff?? Then what do you do? You cant leave it WFO, and pull it in real fast. I doubt that it hurts anything. I only dont use the clutch if I'm racing some cocky kid with a 400ex (no offense to anyone with a 400ex, but some kids refuse to admit that their piped 400 will lose to my 330ex). All it really does for me it makes me beat them by even more so I can rub it in and get them to shut the hell up.

i was wonderin but dry shiftin my self.... i do alot, and i mean alot of wheelies... like avidly, and i dry shift all the time so i was wonderin if it will tear it up.... i heard once u get to a certain rpm(like when you feel its time to shift, but not to low of rpm and not to high), that if it shifts very easy then it was at the right rpm to shift with out clutch.... but if its hard to shift and u force it then your askin for trouble... is any of this true or not? i need to know bad before i tear the transmission out.

The right way to do it is to let off the gas, shift, and get back on the gas in a fraction of a second. It all has to be done like it's one motion. Also only do that when you up shift, if you downshift without the clutch it will cause damage. And if you hold the throttle wide open the whole time and shift with no clutch and not letting off the throttle it will cause damage.

downshifting with out the clutch is bad... :(.

I do this all the time, espesicaly at near the end of a race. It always feels like it wont hurt anything. I guess mabey I should stop.

And just exactly what damage does this cause

It'll break your shift forks, shift drum, shift shaft, shift arm or gear selector and spring :)

i think he was talking about hondardr4life, who a few months ago, said his 330ex will beat a stock 400ex, but not a piped one...now it will beat a piped 400ex...my question to hondardr4life is how does it compare to xx300exrdrxx's 250r that he just got? and how much does he weigh compared to the guys riding on the 400's that he smokes? are the bikes beat? do they actually perform like they should? i'll find out next spring if what he says is true and if he smokes me in a drag like he says...i'll eat the proverbial crow

I have been banging gears on all kinds of bikes since 1978 without using the clutch. Have never broken any internal engine parts as a result of it.

while dragging, try to have pressure applied to the shifter but not quite enough to make it shift w/o the clutch. then when you want to shift, you simply "slap" the clutch. since you had pressure on the shifter, it will then shift in the amount of time it took you to "slap" the clutch lever. you can hold the bike wide open while doing this with no ill effects.

I love spankin' kids on thier modded quads against my stocker using this technique.

I should have been more specific. I have only ever raced 2 400ex's. One was stock, and I did beat him by a good bit, and the other had a WB e series slip on and thats it. I would probablly lose to your quad speedy because you have a full system, and if I can remember right, a fewe other little things. And about 300exrdr's 250r, he kills me, lol. That 250r is so fast, I have absolutely no chance. Hopefully we can all go riding sometime this spring, but I dont think I will have the EX. By then I will have some sort of new faster quad.

i almost never shift with the clutch and i have a lot of power running throgh my tranny. i just overrev a little and then let completely off so no stress is on the tranny when i shift and then i shift and get right back on as soon as my foot is almost down. i don't think it'll hurt anything if you do it perfect like that. however, it will bent shift forks if you miss a gear then you're sol. i bent a shift fork and had to get the cases split to get a new one. it was bent so bad it had to be cut out. lol. other than that i think it's ok.

IDK. They wouldn't put a clutch on something if you weren't supposed to use it. It takes me more time to shift without the clutch, and my clutch is very stiff. I'm just used to it.
