my 02 400ex has a slight tapping coming from the head at idle and speeds up with higher rpms..honda shop took it apart and say crank end bearings but it sounds like its coming from the head.i wonder if they told me this to sell me a motor job?..valves are all adjusted correctly and all, timing chain is tight,..is there anyone else that ever had this problem?i just did an oil change and it seemed a little quiter...could the head be being starved of oil?...someone please help

Most all aftermarket cams will make a ticking noise because of the agressive grind. The valves shut a lot faster and 75 times a second at 9000rpm for each pair of valves. You could hear 20-25 ticks per second at idle if both sides are ticking, 10-12 per second if only the exhaust (most common, since they are held open longre and have to close faster so the piston doesn't hit them).

A stock cam will even tick a little if you listen for it.

my quad was ticking too for a while, i got my valves done and it still ticked. i had 'em look into the problem and it was the timing chain tentioner thingy... hope i helped at all?

i dont konw too much about the motor, but he said that it wasent keeping the chain tight so it was whackin the sides in there, i looked at the tentioner and it was all mangled lookin so i believed him, ever scince he replaced it, it hasent been ticking at all, it was a 67 some dollar piece to give an estimit
