What exactly does porting do to an engine? Does an engine need porting when installing a hotcam?

intake porting increases air flow, exhaust porting increases the rate of departure of the exhaust gases...

You don't need it but it is a good idea if you plan on doing a piston later....

Porting usually refers to increasing the size of the ports or modifying them to flow more air. There usually is no benefit with stock motor or stock bore. Your cam /s will have the valves open longer allowing for more air fuel to enter & escape. Porting if not done right can casue power loss. done correctly still usually adds more top end & some low end loss. Something to keep in mind if you increase the bore. Alot of place simple clean up the ports. There is also a method of high velocity porting. This makes sense since cause too much flow is not good.
