Who makes the best rev box?

11-20-2005, 04:53 PM
i would say big gun cuz it gives u 1 hp some how.

gives u 1hp??

11-20-2005, 05:11 PM
big gun claimes ther rev box gives a 400ex 1 more horse power but on a 400ex their useless cuz a 400ex stops making power in the 8000 rpm's so that extra 1000rpm is useless at less some one cant shift right.

Rev boxes are useful in the bigger bores according to people who know stuff(not me) :p

with an aggressive cam, they are useful. i would get the gt thunder one. if price isn't a concern, look in to msd.

the white brothers and big gun do come from the same company, HONDA. its a stock xr250 box, which is a kickstart. something about that is why you get the starting troubles when put on a electric start 400ex. curtis sparks and gthunder make there own and neither have any starting issues. i suggest the gthunder. i beleive he even has a few different boxes (different power curves) so you can choose what fits your needs

and yes, the 400ex stops making power well before the rev limit, so unless you have a cam and porting that is set up to rev REALLY high, a rev box is useless unless it alters the power curve before max rpm or moves max power past the stock limit

I do realize that i won't have s*** for power up top but all I want is a couple mph for lake running. It would still wind out good right?

I suggest a cam and timing key, more noticeable...

that extra rpm gives u only 1-2 extra mph.

How do you figure? In a manual transmition vehicle, doesn't RPM translate directly to your speed depending on the variables of gear ratios, sprocket sizes, and wheel sizes?

Im running a Big Gun on my 330ex Sport class quad and have had NO starting troubles. I know its not a 400, but thought I might share...

300's are different, from what i know, the 400ex is the only one that was actually made for a different machine

Big Gun and TC will start below 30 degrees F, most of the others especially WB will not start your 400ex.

the sparks is crap. i have had 2 of those and would never go that way again. both gt thunders have served me well. i hear the big gun will start in winter too along with the TC. do not get a WB either.

the white brothers and big gun are the exact same part

It was never too much of a problem for my 400ex to start in the winter with my WB rev box. And the kind of winter I'm talking about 10 degrees is a warm day. I always made sure to pump the throttle a few times before I started it and put the choke on, fires right up and I just give it a little throttle after that to keep it running until it warms up.

I used the WB box at Grantsburg MX at 40F it wouldn't start, put the stocker in it fired right up.

Weird. I never really had a problem with mine, I'd notice it starts harder than in warm weather but it would start. I never had the problem of it not starting at all because of cold weather and having that rev box. Guess I just got a "bad" one.

I am runnig a magnum and this is my 2nd one. 1st one I had...kinda blew out some how the first 5 minutes I was running it and didn't work anymore....C&D replaced it free of charge for me and I have been running this one for about a year now with 0 problems. Starts in the cold and everything. Good in my book.

maybe the big gun and the WB is the same box, i don't know. i have not used either one. not one person that i have talked to who has OWNED a big gun box told me that they have had starting problems. i hear that a lot though with the WB. i know the sparks is not good. if you have a battery that is in really good shape you may not have a problem starting the bike. i know many of times when it was 40 degrees out my bike would not start with the sparks, along with my buddies bike. all we had to do is put the stock box back on and it would fire right up. you can contact laz at gt thunder @ www.gtthunder.com

I agree Cals, the Sparks is a hard starting box, I don't know if it is worth the small amount of gains it gives...

here is why the wb and big gunn have hard starting problems...there is a kick back ciruit in it since it was originally designed for the xr250, a kickstart dirt bike...essentially what this is/ does is if the bike does not reach a minimum rpms, say 2000 for example, the circuit prevents the spark plug from firing, or if your only have, say 1995 rpms, the plug won't fire....the 400ex starts at certain rpm that is just above the low cutoff point...using the above 2000 rpm example, we will say the 400ex starts at 2075 rpm...now you add a weak battery or cold weather to thicken the oill and slow down the internals, then you lose that 75 rpm and more needed to start the bike...i hope that explains why they don't work on the 400ex all that well

all rpms are just for example...they are not the actual rpm...they are just examples...
