14 tooth front sprocket for better hole shot and torque. stock front sprocket is 15 tooth.

15 stock front, 38 stock rear

if you want more take off drop one in front.

if you REALLY want to top out FAAST. go 14/39!!
only draw back is 5th gear feels like it should be fourth, but well worth it!!!

im pretty sure its 15 tooth. Id go with the 14 tooth so u keep some topspeed.

if you want top end run go up one tooth in the front to a 16 tooth, leave the rear stock. it all depends what you have on your bike as far as mods. if the bike has the power it's worth it to go up a tooth.

im currently running 76.5mph on GPS.

if you want the bottom end, does it matter if you go down one in the front or up one in the back? it accomplishes the same result, correct?

going up one tooth in the front is equal to about going down 3 teeth in the rear

Going down 1 in the front is approx the same as going up 3 in the rear.

I'm running 16/38 gearing also. Its great IMO. I have stage 2 hotcam,WB slipon, 10:1 wiseco piston, velocity intake.

by the way, nobody can really tell you whether you should go down 1, stay the same, go up a tooth, or to start in 2nd instead of first. A solid launch has more than one factor and torque certainly isn't the only one. Having enough hp to keep the wheel spinning is key too. Nothing worse than bogging down and having your tires grab traction. You have to experiment. Your tire size (18", 20" 22"), type of tires, starting surface, your weight, rider positioning all play a critical role. At about $8 each, get a 14 and 16 tooth and experiment.

It really depends on how you use your quad. If you want take off power and ride on tight trails or tracks, go to a smaller front sprocket.

stick wi the stock sproket....i changed mine and I hated it...u will have to be hitting jumps in 5th atht youwould usually clear in 4th w/ half throttle.....i got a 14t

i got a 16/39 with 18" tires and i have stock 400ex with stock gearing. They feel about the same except the 16/38 has a built motor. Of course the 16/38 bike is fast because of motor but the gearing is similar with the tire change.

The front sproket is a 14tooth. Going one up in the front is like going 3 down in the rear alot cheaper to change the front one but both easy to put on.

im running a 13/36 combo on my XC bike. I wanted the smallest rear sprocket I could get for ground clearance cause I run just a sprocket guard in the back (no skidplate), and for me a 14t front sprocket it was geared a little high for tighter slower trails but you could whind out each gear longer. with the 13t the gears feel a little shorter and I can get topped out in 5th gear pretty quick, but I got more than enough torque for the tight trails.

I run this combo now mine too for added ground clearance. I run with a Lonestar sprocket guard.

The 99-04 had one size front sprocket (I believe 14T) and the 05-up used a different front sprocket (I believe 15T) from the factory.

I am 100% sure that the 05-08 400ex is a 14 tooth front sprocket stock u can go on rocky mountain atv and it will tell u all ur specs on the bike or look in the manual..just put a 15tooth on and u can see a big difference in 4th and 5th gear gives u some more top end.

I much prefer 15/38 over 14/39. But being as I have a modified setup Im not sure everyone would ageree.

I found with a 14/38 setup on mine I would run out of gears WAY to fast. Excellent torque but even in tighter trails I can hit 5th depending on how they are setup.

I like my new setup of 15/37 the best so far. Plenty of torque but a little more speed.

Like the one guy said you have to experiment with it. They arent that expensive for the front so you can get a few and try them out. Everyone is going to have a different opinion.

Main issue is finding balance as already suggested. Gobs of torque is nice when you need it, but if you need to run wide open a smaller front sprocket pretty much means you will run out of gears quickly for many different people it doesnt work to well. For me it was just too much with a 14t, I was in 4th and 5th and still needed more speed. With a 39 rear it was ok, but I still wanted more speed. Tried a 16/38 combo and had good speed but not enough torque. Thats why I settled on a 15/37. 15/36 probably woulda worked too.

Remember this:
-Front sprocket down a tooth is torque, up a tooth is speed.
-Going down or up 1 tooth on the front sprocket=3 teeth in the rear.
-Going down a tooth in the rear sprocket is speed, going up is torque.
