Well today I was ridin my 300ex and rode a long way and then I was headed home and i was goin full throttle and all of a sudden I hear CLANK and im like **** and so I pull in the clutch real quick and just coast to the side of the road and shes smokin pretty bad there a lota smoke commin out of the crankcase breather hose and oil is every where and i look under it and there is no oil plug and oil is all over the road so im just WOW this really sucks so we take it back to the house and let her cool down and then we put new oil in it and let her sit we crank her and nothin nothin at all so I check the valves and they are all moving and **** so then i put oil in there and then we try to push start it so we push it and she fires right up goes in gear and shifts ok but its makin a pretty bad noise inside im not for sure where but it is so then we just let it sit there and just idling we would rev it and smokes comes out the exhuast and the breather tube so guyz this is where i need you help what do you think is wrong???!!!???

u could have blown your piston but i dont think that would make oil go every where?????

Well it seams like it could be the piston rings becuaze it sometimes wont start or will be very hard to start tryin the starter but push start works pretty good could someone please give me a good estimate of what could be wrong

I agree with nates, when you run out of oil the rings grind away at the cylinder. Your connecting rod could also be toast becuase of the friction it had on the crank. You probably blew a gasket because of all that oil spill, try and trace the path of the oil to where it is coming from if you can. I would also suggest not running your quad anymore, there could be some bits of metal floating around which can cause serious damage. The only thing to do is take her apart and have a look. :(

You should have had a mechanic look at it before you started it back up. If the rings are 'broke" they can scratch the cyl wall. If the wall is scratched; you will prolly have to get a bore job to next size over. I suggest you take to reputable shop BEFORE you try to turn it over again.

Yea shes coming apart first thing in the morning and it sucks alot cuz I just got it back about a month and a half ago from being bored and crap , but I guess I should of checked that before i went ridin. Well what about the noise im hearing it sounds like a knocking noise and its comin from around the exhuast area?? still need some ideas on whats wrong guyz

You shouldn't run full throttle down the road with an unlimited rev box like the TC.

Well it wasnt exactly full throttle it was more like 90% throttle but Ive was just goin a short wayz. Well does anyone else have any suggestions on what could be wrong

you could have ran over a oil spout and it got into your airbox then made it not work?my brothers recon ran 2 days with out oil before it siezed.. i know what your thinking and no we didnt do it on purpose

Well the good thing is its not seized but im pretty sure the piston wrings ar fried but its the noise that is really gettin to me I have no clue what it is and another thing if the piston wall is scratched do I have to bore it or could I get it honed well im sure it depends on the severity of the scratches and such. keep it commin guyz

a quick compression test might give you an idea what's going on.. but from your description it sounds like it might be time to give your quad a little open heart surgery and find out what's gone wrong :(

Yea thats pretty true leo ill let you guyz know tommrow when i get it all apart man never thought leo would respond to my post lol thanks alot guyz

i say your rings are bad and toast:( thats what caused the oil to go everywhere it is called oil blowback or something like that

Well i was readin some of your answers and u were telling me about busted gaskets cuz of all the oil and the oil was comin from the oil drain bolt it fell out while i was ridin and diddnt know it till CLANK and all the oil drained out. So that is where the oil came from

if you take it apart make sure the piston wall is not scratched up and it is probly the rings but check the piston if it is hitting the vavles and the crank

Well I took it apart this morning and I was pretty happy. The piston and rings are deffinatly fried so I need a new one of them and the clylinder wall has scuffed it has excess alminum from the piston and Im wondering if I can do 2 things have it rebored what it was orginally or hone it what do you guyz think will I have to bore it over more or what?

it depends how bad it is

Nate's96 300ex
06-23-2002, 10:34 AM
Well it doesnt seam to bad its like a plastic feel. you know how like if you rub plastic against metal and the residue is on the metal well thats what it's like im hoping it can be honed out

Nate's96 300ex
06-23-2002, 10:38 AM
Oh and those scuffs are just in one area not all over

honda250xrider
06-23-2002, 10:44 AM
u might be able to get it honed try to take it to someplace and ask them what they think about it

i hate to say this. but before you go spending a bunch of money on the top end of your motor you should have the bottom end checked out you may have turned a bearing.that may be noise you are hearing. if you did its going to be expensive.

The clanking was probably the piston hitting the side of the sleeve, i.e. the aluminum shavings. I dont think a bearing would burn up that fast.Ive had a whole 250X/300EX motor apart before, and the all of the oil is sometimes hard to get out.

Also, if the scratches were only on one side, thats how you would get the "clanking".

Nate's96 300ex

Yea the bottom end is fine already checked it all out and there is no play in the rod or anything and its all fine.

Id say get a new piston, rings, new piston pin, circlips, and id go up one size bore, or try to hone it.it depends on how deep the scratches are, etc.Id definately be sure you have the right size piston, and sleeve after you hone/bore it.
