Well im 16 and make 7 an hour as mechanic for lawn care company. I definately dont want to do this all my life, but my parents really dont have the money for college and neither do I with my quad and stuff. The lawn care buisness i work for is owned by my dads friend and hes all in to entrepeneuring (sp?) I know what it takes to have a successful buisness and I have about 4 or 5 friends that all know their ****. Are there any grants i can get? I know i could make some money off of being a Parts Unlimited dealer for instance. But im also thinking of like building quad accessories ( bumpers, grab bars, aluminum airbox, number plate mounts, seat latches ) Only thing is I need a Tig and need to learn to TIG.
This is my future and im very serious about it. Besides this my only other thing to fall back on is a sprinkler system engineer for 20 an hour...:grr:

its called a loan, but good luck. without any schooling or any caleterall (sp?) banks are gonna have a hard time believing in any concept you come up with even if its the best idea in the entire world.

Go get yourself a loan, but dont start a business...go to school. Learn what actually does make a business run. I thought I knew a lot too, I've actually been running my own business for about 5 years now. I've learned so much in college though I definately know what I want to do in life and how to go about being successful. If your parents don't have a lot of money, look into fafsa. Federal aid is there, and so are student loans.

Like I said, get in school. there are a million ways to do it if you work hard enough at it.

First off.. apply for all the scholarships you are eligable for.. there are tons of them if you look, some small some big... get what you can there, and then get a student loan..... that way youll have the know how to run a business, you can get a business loan easier, and if it falls through, you have a degree to fall back on...

you might want to learn how to spell "business" first. Just a thought.... :p

anybody can get a student loan so the idea of not being able to pay for college is ridiculous...talk to your guidance counsleor at school...and by the way, $20 is a quite a bit more than what I or most people in America make

This may be hard to do , but sometimes the best thing to do is sell your quad to help pay some of the tuition costs . Quads will still be around after you're done paying for college and have an education .

It might be easy to get grants to start a business , but without some type of business management courses or diploma behind you , chances are you won't be running your business to it's fullest . Having a diploma will show you how to properly manage your business .... how to cut costs and still make money ... i think this should be your first step if you want a succesful company .

I had to sell my quad back when I was 18 , to be able to pay for college . As much as it killed me to have to do it , it was the best thing I could have ever done . I now have a diploma , make way better money than I did before my diploma and I bought a brand new quad back in 2004 .

Sell your toy , go to college , open your business , manage it PROPERLY , make tons of money , buy brand new toys !!!

but keep you toys never sell them!!!

that what I did !!!

if your parents don't have much money you will get lots of grant money for school!!! you cant get truned down for student loans!!

there are lots of scholarships !! your only 16 you have time to look around!!

to get a loan you need to have a Business plan (50-500 pages) so the bank can look at it and see you know what you are doing and that you will have the funds to repay the loan!!
if you dont have the business know how you will pay big bucks for some one to help you get make one!! I have been making one for the last 2 years!!!

look http://www.bplans.com/spv/3253/ this one sucks too

goto college,... like everyone was saying u probably wont get a loan for a business being so young and probably having no credit.. there is a scholorship for everything, and if your parents dont make alot then you will probably get one easy.. also if u have a type of minority in u try to exploit that for a scholorship.. i have a few friends who jsut because they are black and spanish get scholorships for being that, even if their parents make good money... also saying u personally dont have enough money for school because of your quad is foolish, in no way is a quad more important than getting an education and in the future being able to support your family comfortably.

Ok, trust me on this one. At 16, you DON'T know what it takes to have a successful business.

I'm going to tell you the truth right here and now, and it's going to hurt. But it's still the truth, and everybody else will agree.

If you honestly think that you are too poor to go to college, then you do NOT have the skills needed to start your own business. College is one of the easiest things in the world to get money for, and you can't even figure that part out. How in the world do you expect to get a business loan and deal with taxes and finances and accounting to make your shop successful?

You want to go into business, that's fine, but prepare yourself for it. Get a student loan, and take some business management and accounting classes, as well as a few courses on metallugy, mechanical engineering, and welding.

You're not going to be able to grab a couple friends and a TIG welder, and be successful. The world is a little bit more complex than that.

Yeah after reading your replies I realized how un-realistic i was being.
I dont think i can get a scholarship for having parents who do not earn enough money because my parents make about 100 grand per year. No its not a lot but to the Colleges it is. My brother asked my parents if he could go to college and they said no. The only chance of me going is if I basically pay for it all. If this means selling my quad, motorcycle, and anything else worth a dang i'll do it I guess. Do they give out scholarships for Cherokee Indians or Left handed people?

I was a carpenter for 8 years my father and step father both owned companies in the custruction trade. I tried last year and did verrywell my first year. Now I have taken a job with another builder. Until you have done it you have no idea the stress that comes with owning your own buisness.
Get the money and go to school, it has to be easier if you understand the buisness end of things.
just my 2cents

im 18 and im going to college for business, before you can open up your own shop you have to consider a few things

- most of your business is going to be word of mouth
-you need to know how to run a business, go to a community college for 2 years, then go from there try to get a job at the local dealer, people will start seeing you as a compitent person, and will feel comfortable with you.
-set your prices slightly lower for the starters then your closest competitor, drawing business in.
- its prolly going to take you 5-10 years to get to the "owning" part.
-location is one of the biggest things.

im tellin ya man go to college....i cant belive im typeing this and telling it to you. As how much i hated high school and am now going into college, i wish i would have done better in high school to go to a better college, all loans aside

Just a little tip....

In order to be a parts unlimited dealer, you have to have a $5000 buy in and maintain at least $8000 worth of business a year.

100,000 per year is a vey decent wage for a family...considering my family makes less then that and im attending college...i agree with everyone about the college thing and the loans.....i applied to the fasfa and received 7,000 off om my tuition.....and you can also consider the fact that some of these loans you get dont require you to start paying till 6-9 months after you have graduated from class.that way you can pick up a decent job to pay your loan off...now granted your interest rate will go up...but if u put what you learned in college to good use it will basically pay for itself in the longrun...

another thing to consider is what type of school you are interested in? a 4 year college or maybe a tech school?

I my self chose to go to a tech school to be a motorcycle technician because quads and bikes have been around me since i was a lil kid and i love to tinker on them....also for more then 75% of people they rely on techs to keep them going because people got to face it.....most people are just not mechanically skilled so there are jobs out there for cycle techs....Another reason i choose a tech school is because like you i want to open my own shop one day and at my school we take buisness courses on how to prepare for all the duties and responsibilitys to open and start a buissness....what kind of materials you *must* have in one...So i learn to wrench on bikes and start a buisness all at one place..so to me it was a no brainer to go there....1-2 years of fun wrenching or 4 years of bookwork.......id rather enjoy what i want to learn

well i hope this might of shined a light to an alternative way to start a career...my motto is 'Do what you love to do and stick with it' best advice i can give you and good luck

you say you can fall back on a sprinkler job for $20 an hour ? then why the heck are you working for $7 an hour  Don't know about wages where your at but down south $100 grand per year is way above average income for a couple. Sounds like a load of BS to me :grr:

You dont have to start repaying the loans till 6 months after graduation and u can get them deferred even longer. no need to sell toys to pay for collage that is what loans are for. They just set mine up for 15 years at 1.8%. my quad payment is 2.5 times more than my student loan payment. and the total intrest on the student loan is less than the quad loan!
The goverment wants you to go to school there are programs and loans so that every one can go!

Are you joking about Cherokee and left handed people because I know for a fact there are special scholarships for them!!!

If you family makes over 100G's a year they are in the top 97% of the US population for wage earners!!!!

You have no idea what it takes to run a success*** business or any kind of business untill you acctually run one. And then you still might not know what it takes.

If you want to run a fab shops, which is what sounds like you want to do, go to a tech school. What ever you do, don't go to college and major in business. Everyone does that, its a bull**** major.

Honestly, i wouldn't waste your time trying to sell seat latches and bumpers. Make the main part of your business used bike sales. Then sell the parts and accessories. All the money is in selling the used bike though.

I have to warn you though, when you run your own business it is your life. Days of the week do not matter anymore. You are always working or thinking about work. It becomes your life. Some people can't handle that? Can you? I've been running my own business for 1 year now. Some days are great, other days are 10x worst then the worst day of HS.
